WiFi - accessing free connections on 3G s

If a WiFi connection is located in an iPhone 3G s Settings and appears to be unsecured (no lock symbol) should I be able to use this connection?

I've selected a number of unsecured networks on my iPhone 3Gs in different locations but even though they appear to be connected, I can't connect to the internet.

Is there an additional step or setting that I'm missing??

    Thanks.

you are only connecting to a wifi router... which may or not be connected to the net.... no way of knowing unless you know the network.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean... e.g. the wireless network at my local pub is not "locked"... in the past, once I'd connect, I'd be straight onto the internet...

Recently though, even though I appear to connect, I cannot access the internet... and the publican tells me that he hasn't changed any settings...

I'm baffled... but thanks anyway.

try removing & re-adding the network again

settings > wifi > SSID > 'forget this network'

    then scan & reconnect

Tried it... no luck... thanks anyway...

No every unlocked network is capable of net access.
I often connect to networks, but then safari fails

Have you ever gotten onto the internet over the wifi? Its not just these unsecured networks in isolation?

I use WiFi regularly & never had a problem. I was in a friends house last night & my iPhone picked up & accessed his wireless immediately.

My problem is that in some cases, I appear to have connected to an unsecured network (the box is ticked) but I'm unable to link to the Internet.

What's really annoying is that I was able to access the WiFi in the pub up to recently, as were a number of my friends. The owner assures us that he has not changed the settings...

    many reasons

it could require more login info like bitbuzz

it may only be a router

you cant just connect willy nilly to a random wifi router

download dessid, it decodes eircom wifi

He may not have changed the settings (you can still connect, so he hasnt), but that doesnt mean there is still internet access. Narrow down the problem by checking a)can your friends access internet over the same wifi b)if not, check can you connect to internet by connect a cable to the router.

it very much looks like there is a fault with line (telephone cable disconnected) or with the ISP (has he paid the bill?!)
