Odd results from self-employed calculation

Last year I was working in a PAYE job for most of '09 (teaching on a PLC course) and was freelancing on the side.

The majority of my income came from the teaching job as I was too busy to do much freelancing, so I made sure my tax credits went into the income earned from this job. Obviously this means I'm being taxed on anything I've earned as a freelance, as small as that may be.

Anyway, I calculated what I owed on ROS and got a result a bit higher than expected. There seems to be a few anomolies and I'm hoping someone here can help explain them.

In the teaching job I earned ~20k and paid around €200 in the Income Levy over the course of the year. The freelancing brought in just shy of 7k and yet I seem to be paying around €250 income levy for that.

I also would have thought I could detail the PRSI I've paid as part of my PAYE job, along with telling them what I earned and what I paid in tax already on the back of that. Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The Income Levy averages out at 1.67% for 2009

    20k * 1.67% = 334
    7k * 1.67% = 117

Total Income Levy Due = 450
Less Income levy paid = -200

Income Levy due now = 250

Reviewing your figures it seems you underpaid your Income Levy on your 20k Salary via your PAYE, obviously that wouldnt be your fault, it would be your employers, but that doesnt change the end result I am afraid.

    Hope that helps,

    Inq

    That explains that anyway.

    Thanks.
