Ronan Power in Midleton. Having used him myself I really can't recommend him highly enough. http://ronanpowercabinetmaker.com

His work is truly excellent, he knows and understands wood (in a way that an awful lot of Celtic Tiger tradesmen simply don't) and his prices were very very reasonable. We didn't think we could really afford a handmade kitchen, but then discovered that his prices put a bespoke handmade kitchen well within reach, even compared with inferior versions being sold around Cork. Out of all the many, many trades who worked on our house, he was one of the stars for quality and value.

Everything handmade and he has a great eye for what works in a kitchen. We had our design more or less decided, but changed it after some sensible suggestions by him.

By the way, we were originally looking at Linehans but Ronan came in with an even better kitchen for between 1/3 and 1/2 of the price (yes, really). If I am not allowed say that on this forum, then Mods please edit.

Now that the kitchen is in, we love it and appreciate the quality, expertise and thought that went into it. :)

would you mind also letting me know how much it cost you? Was looking at handmade kitchen with in frame design and it is beyond my budget so far! Would it be possible to get a picture of your kitchen as I'm also looking for ideas? prefer a more traditional style

Hi was thinking about going to talk to him also .. did anyone get a price from him

As always, I recommend that you make sure you a comparing like with like when pricing kitchens. Cheapest isn't always best. Check the quality of the kitchen units and doors. Another good supplier in Cork is Chris Keating House of Design.

i dont think i need to pm the cost of my kitchen,i got a really good deal from cash and carry.2200 cost and 300 fitting for a medium size high gloss cream kitchen. Really pleased with it. This was in carlow but id say the same price would be in cork.

I'm trying to find a suitable kitchen for a very small cottage in Cork. All the IKEA ones are far too plastic looking for my cottage. Ronan Power's kitchens looks great.

Is Oxygen Temp's price around the same as Ronan Power would charge? Around 2500?? Thanks

holy crap can't believe all the cheap prices for kitchens here have to have a serious talk with herself. we are building up north and because it's our first build everything vat free, but all the prices we have got are in and around 13000 sterling. this is a medium size kitchen in oak, with an island and a granite work top. must check out some of the place mentioned here to see how they compare

No Kingshankley, you are probably just looking at better quality kitchens. At the end of the day the difference between a €15,000 kitchen and a €2,000 kitchen will be very apparent from first glance from the designs that can be achieved, the quality of finish and materials, and on closer inspection the quality of the cabinets, hinges, shelf fittings, drawers etc etc. All depends on what you are looking for really!

You could start by buying one of the Irish kitchen magazines. While a lot of the kitchens are extremely high end they will give you an idea of what your taste, likes are. Having a rough idea of the appliances you plan on using is also a help. From there you can call to your local showrooms and get some quotes. While price is very important nowadays, having a designer/company you can get along with and trust is also vital. One more thing, not all recommendations here are legitimate ones. I have seen one guy in particular here recommend companies who advertise in his online directory. This is not a recommendation this is an advertisement in my opinion:) Just saying.

    Hi All,
I too am in the process of building a house in Kerry. My dream is to have a hand painted in frame kitchen, all the quotes I seem to be getting are around the 20k mark. Is this not really expensive? Inframe was the old way of making kitchens so how is it so expensive now? Can I get it any better than that/ What do you all think? If it going to be painted what type of wood would do could it be something like red deal?
    Thanks very much.

inframe kitchens are dearer because the doors are dearer(door and frame) and they take about 3 times longer to make.tulipwood is mainly used for painting and some could use beech, maple or soft maple.

    Dear fm,
Thanks so much for replying I appreciate it. So those quotes are about right then? Is it true that with in frame door you have problems with heat from the kitcehn warping the wood and door not closing properly. Is red deal out of the question as one guy says that what he does his in frame kitchens in? Am I mad thinking of an inframe kitchen?
    Thanks again all

can't really say that the quotes are right or not-depends also on what type or carcasses ,drawers and pull out systems you get as well.regarding warping-the doors are kept closed by magnets so these should prevent them from warping but the odd one could drop(depends on quality of hinge) and hit off frame.any decent company should stand over any issue like that.red deal isnt suitable for painting imo, usually used because it's cheap,I have never seen it being used for painting, nearly 20 years doing kitchens.

top of the range modern day inframe kitchens can use the following materials.
birch carcasses(plywood form)you might see some companies stating no mdf or chipboard used.
30mm thick inframe doors in tulip or maple(standard is 22mm but 30 looks much better)
solid dovetailed drawers with concealed runners
    layers off cornice.
hand painted on site after fitting.

none of the above are essential but it shows what can be done.

You are probably just looking at the quality kitchens.Add some hanging lights that really add a little style and are great for task lighting. Some recessed lighting can provide good lighting and under cabinet lighting really bring out the counters and give you light when you worked there.
