Hyundai Getz / Seat Cordoba / What????

I'm in the market for a new car and I need help.

My current car (a Daihatsu Sirion) cost me €4k 7 years ago and has served me very well, but it looks very beaten up (it has been broken into and has sustained many scapes in carparks so it has plenty of dents and chipped paint etc.). It's time for a change. My local garage deals in Daihatsu and Seat and has offered me €1450 trade-in if I buy a used car from them, which is more than I had imagined I would get (I thought I might have problems getting rid of it at all).

There are a couple of possibilities there at the moment, one is a 06 Hyundai Getz, 1.1L, the other a 06 Seat Cordoba, 1.2L, newer model. The mileage is similar (and low) on both. I haven't got a price on the Hyundai yet (should get a call this afternoon), the Seat will cost me €5,700 after trade-in, and has just completed it's NCT.

I'm in no major rush but hope to buy in the next month or two. I'm not sure what I think at the moment, I don't know what the brand of cars are like or if I should wait and ask the garage to keep a look out for something for me. €6K is my absolute max, and I want a 05/06 car as I want it to last me 5 or 6 years if possible!.

    Any advice greatly appreciated! :)

ETA: I do very low milage day-to-day, with a very occasional longer trip, and am a girl if that makes a difference.

Do you actually need the extra room and boot space of the cordoba? Its a tough one other than that, i imagine running costs will be similiar, i often drive a car with the same engine are the one in that cordoba and find it extremely good on petrol but i imagine the getz would be as good, not so sure on reliability, the engine in the cordoba should be pretty reliable, but the getz was always considered a fairly decent car so that should be fairly alright also, The price difference should probably swing it for you IMO, but if they were similiar I would choose the cordoba

    Thanks for the response Zonda

No to be honest I don't need the extra room/boot space. My husband has a bigger car so we just use that when space is needed, and for longer journeys usually.

Just heard back - €4,700 for the getz. I had hoped for a little cheaper but it actually has very low mileage - 36000 KM (approx 22000 miles). The Cordoba has 65000km on the clock.

Safety is something I should consider, as if I keep it as long as I did my last car it may be transporting kids at some stage in the future. That and reliability are my two biggest concerns. Any thoughts?

Well, in terms of safety, they both got 4 out of 5 stars in the EuroNcap crash tests which is fine for a car of that age

    http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/jd-power-owner-satisfaction-2009/superminis-9-15/240819

Heres a satisfaction survey and judging by that there should'nt be much in it reliability wise, with the getz maybe slightly more reliable but every car is only as reliable as it is well maintained of course. €1000 is a decent gap alright

Definitely test drive both cars anyway, you may love one and hate the other but see anyway

don't limit yourself to one dealer, find something you like that's good value.

Thanks both, I will try some more dealers over the weekend to see if they will offer any trade-in (the other garage I visited today looked at me like I had 10 heads when I asked!).

I'm veering towards the getz but I think it's slightly overpriced (not surprising since I had shown interest before it was priced).

Was that in Midleton by any chance?
I drive a 08 Cordoba, Be it a 1.4Tdi sport which I will be changing thhis year. But as for the car itself I never had an issue with it to be honest.
    Comfortable
    Reliable
    Economical ...(Miser)
HUGE boot to carry all those bags belonging to the kids and all your bags from shopping.
I wouldnt be changing it only i have the option to do so.
I only have 18k Kilometers on mine but as I said
    Lovely car.;)
To Me the Gets would appear to be smaller??

Thanks for the vote of confidence for the Cordoba.

    Nope

Yes the Getz is a lot smaller. I'm very undecided, I won't get to test-drive for a couple of weeks as they are closed this coming Saturday for the long weekend. Thanks for all the advice though, I'd be lost without it!

Well to be honest the Getz might be a bit too small in time to come if you plan on transporting kids and baggage

I know not all women would like the Cordoba. Women in general tend to go for Hatchback models
But it is up to yourself as to which you prefer to drive.
There may be more options as in models to choose from
Is there a reason you only chose those two?

Not really! My car is very beaten-up looking and I knew it would be hard to get rid of, and my local garage offered me €1450 trade-in which I think is pretty good going! The cordoba and the getz were the only 2 viable options (cost-wise) they had today, but I'm not going to rush into anything and I may even ask them to keep an eye out for something else for me.

You should still shop around. Dont be fooled by a sales man trade in value. A polish fella that works for me got a 06 cordoba with 60k km for 6k. Get your hubby to ring the garage and ask the price of the cordoba for the fun of it.

a lot of garages will wive 750 off a 6000 car (there is no hard and fast rule of course) but shop around, you might for example get a Getz for 5k with no trade in, meaning if you can get more than 250 selling your own privately (not exactly difficult) you may be better off.

figures taken from top of head of course, but you get the idea.

06 Getz's start at 4250 on carzone, thats before discounts for not trading in.

Even if you only got 500 for your car privately, that's a 3750 cost to change worst case scenario.
And I can't see how you couldnt knock 200 off the asking price for a straight deal bringing you close to 3500 to change, or 1200 less than the lower mileage deal (you're doing tiny mileage and Getzs are good cars, so shouldn't be an issue)

Better still, aim to buy this lovely looking 21,000 km fiesta 1.25 Zetec for close to 5k and forget about the Getz.

    +1

Far better car all things considered

+ 1 aswell thats a tidy little motor

Thanks for that, I'm following up on that Fiesta, can't get an answer yet! I also spotted another 06 fiesta in a garage for €6k, I rang up there enquiring about trade-in and they said €5500. It's going through the NCT next week, I might go down over the weekend for a look.

Somebody I work with is interested in picking up a cheap car for a learner driver and has asked me if I will sell her mine. Given that I know her, I don't think I could ask for more than €400/500 for it. I need to give her an answer this week as if I'm not going to sell it she needs to look elsewhere.
I'm all undecided now as one garage offered me €1400 trade-in - but to be honest I feel the cars were probably a little overpriced, and they didn't have anything to catch my eye. They had an 06 fiesta too but they were looking for €7500 for it.

I'm really confused, I don't need to decide on a car today or tomorrow but I do need to decide whether to hang on to mine for trade-in or sell it privately to my friend.

Don't focus too much on the trade-in price that garages are giving you. The only figures that matters is the cost to trade-up price. For example you said you were allowed €1400 at one garage that were looking for €7500 for a 06 Fiesta. That means it is costing you €5100 to trade up to the Fiesta.

Now go to another garage with a similar Fiesta and see how much they want from you to trade up to a 06 Fiesta. If it is less than what the first garage wanted then the first garage were actually doing you no favour. All they were doing was giving you a better price on your old car but then adding it back onto the price of the Fiesta you were looking at.

Regarding selling your old car privately, ask the garage what would be their bottom straight deal (no trade-in) price for the new car. You should be able to negotiate a discount for having no trade-in. Subtract from that the money you get from selling your old car privately and see if it works out better for you than trading in your old car.
