Heading to States

I am heading to Boston for few months, looking to pick up few bits and pieces.
Anyone get anything they would recommend? Any shops you found good value?

The main thing i want is a new scope, but if the right deal came about i would get gun and export. I know (from boards) that bringing a scope can be in hand luggage but gun would have to be shipped. Is second hand ok for customs? and brand new 20% or something similar? I contacted my gun dealer and he has no problem with gun sent to him. Is there anything else i would have to get sorted out.

Any ideas from pull-through to range finder to binos to camo gear. I don't want to come after thinking i should have got this and that.

    Thanks in advance.

    Target
    Gander mountain

Customs last I checked item over €600 €100fee
    VAT21% +4% CCT
    So worked example.
    Item $1100 €800~ you pay 25% (VAT+CCT) +€100 =€1100 End user cost

I hope this makes sense to you on new goods still in wrapper. If unwrapped than no tax applies but restrictions might! Homeland security and that kind. Check out US state dept. Illum reticles will not pass customs for private AFAIK.
I bought holsters etc as they were cheap and only leather at the end of the day.

Truglo beads, Cheek risers. T-shirts etc.

organise yourself a trip up to cabelas in Pennsylvania
    well worth it
i picked myself handy little bits up there
even just to go for the look
give yourself the best part of the day looking around the place
into the bargin cave and go through it
youl find loads of bargins in there from optics to clothes
they also have a serious selection of firearms

If you are going to have a fixed address for a while don’t forget mail order. I’ve had stuff shipped overnight to my hotel and brought it home from there. I’ve bought some quality leather stuff from Jeff http://www.jeffsoutfitters.com/Default.aspx
If you declare imports, import duty is calculated and added to price, then you pay VAT on the lot!
On the last stuff I bought and had mailed I got hit also for about 12 quid by GLS, the crowd who handled the distribution for USPS.

Check out Bass Pro in Foxborough, beside the Gilette Stadium - ask for Rudi for best prices. Class shop with acres of shooting and fishing gear.

there is a Cabelas in Scarborough Maine, p*** poor service, no great interest in customers, lots of items not stocked - but maybe it was just a bad Monday for them.

I was in cabelas in Austin Tx. I have to say the helped me when i told them I was all the way from Urop and from bonny ire-land. Saying that I brought two american shooter friends with me! They showed me everything in the shop and helped me a lot.

But the American dudes with me made the introduction!

    Steyr,
As the boys have mentioned, Cabelas is one of the best. They can, however, be a bit pricey. A very nice place to visit, if you head to one of the super stores.

BassProShops.com is also good. Not as good as Cabelas, and about the same price.

SportsmansGuide.com - for the best deals out there. Some of their stuff is not as good as Cabelas, quality wise, however, sometimes you just do not care.

Other bits and pieces - cheaperThanDirt.com and Natchezss.com.

If you are thinking about getting a gun, check out www.ImpactGuns.com

For Optics, you may wish to check out opticsPlanet.net

Lastly, don't forget that the local Walmart may offer a bunch of stuff. Go online and you can ship to store free of charge.

If you have your license you should be able to bring back some ammo.

I would get some high end stuff - scopes, range finders, and the like. Check the prices. Some European stuff may actually be cheaper over there.

If you want to make a day-trip of it out of Boston (and if you need to keep the shopaholics happy too), I'd suggest heading up to Freeport, Maine. Head pretty much straight north from Boston, I-95 (It's roughly a 2hour easy drive from the Common).

There are loads of factory outlets there - and I think Maine is low-tax or tax-free or something - so great savings to be had generally.

For hunting, fishing, and outdoors kit, go straight to LL Bean's factory outlet - huge place and some great bargains to be had.

Can't remember if they sell firearms (wasn't yet a shooter when I was there last, unfortunately:o), but they do sell a lot of optics, fleeces, over-clothing, camo, knives, and other hunting gear.

And some great "high street" brand shops there too - if you want to stock up on non-shooting apparel!:D

Customs, despite the press, is [from my experience] fair when bringing stuff back. I doubt they will get you for anything at all. However, ...

If you start to bring in a few items, like 3 or 4 of the same scope, then they're going to slam you.

One polo leather jacket - just wear it in. Four in your case, get the checkbook out.smile.gif

    Hi,
I'm from USA and from my experience...our border guards there are some of the strictest around. If you are going to buy a gun in the States, I would recommend that you ship it back home to yourself or your gun dealer, as they tend to hassle people for every little thing. Being a US citisen it still takes even me ages to get through, and I never carry guns or anything suspicious through. Just a bit of advice, though I hope your experience is easier. If you have any other questions about the US feel free to send me a message.

Oh, and MA laws, as someone posted, are rather strict (well, for US standards) so, you may need to travel to a diff. state to get the gun-California on the other hand passes out guns like candy, especially to people with mental illness and criminal records..

OP never mentioned a gun, rather a SCOPE
DO NOT CROSS STATE LINES with items bought in different states, as Federal and state law often differ!
Post stuff home, as this way you don't go over weight with your suit case. Postage is very cheap in the states.
I found the people in the post office very helpful to explain what was ok to post and what was not, Buy all your hunting jackets there take of labels etc. Once you are not profiting from your purchase Customs does not usually apply unless item is very expensive.EU regulations and US state Dept. Regs before you purchase also!
    Check out Ireland/
