Looking at it myself, went to Elba last year but finding the accomodation very expensive as were going in peak season this year.
Elba is well worth a look it's a beautifully Italian island, very few English speaking tourists, mainly italians and Germans, amazing beaches.

Whats the best way to get to Elba? It looks great.

OP I'm considering Sardinia too. Have you looked around the south coast? Chia is meant to be fantastic.

I was in Sardinia a few years ago, stayed in Alghero for a long weekend in May, it was beautiful, maybe a little quiet for some tastes.

Sardinia is VERY quite. I think you'd go crazy there for 2 weeks unless you were just going to base yourself there.

Must have a look at Chia, never heard of it, when we went to elba we flew into piza, rented a car and drove down to the ferry at Piombino, there could be easier ways but I don't think the drive took us more than 3 hours we had to stop for a wedding along the way, It's a motorway most of the way to the ferry. Moby lines are one of the ferrys http://www.mobylines.com/ Think the ferry itself took just over an hour.
I'd highly recommend a tom tom if your going to drive and a convertible to soak up the rays.
Elba is a great island for snorkeling, the sea is very calm and warm.

Was in Alghero for a five days in early June about 2 years ago. I was told that the island gets very hot and crowded in July-August as this is a popular destination for the Italians themselves who wouldn't be my favourite tourists. Great for 5 days but after that I would find it a bit long.
