Over the last few months, we've gone fairly 5er mad. There's been lots of discussion over whether the F10 is better than looking than the E60 etc.

So here it is, the definitive poll.

In your humble opinion, of the cars below which is the best looking 5 Series?

I assume the last one is meant to be 2010- Chris?

I've only seen one, it was a very nicly specced 525, was absolutely gorgeous, never been a fan of the 5 Series but the new one is a fine car

    E34

I have only seen a Black 530D from a distance of the 2010 so I had to pick the E60 on that basis.

I sold my 525i E34, seven years ago, still miss it, owned it for three years, best car I ever had.

E34 for me, owned one in the past and loved it. The e34 is timeless IMO, hope to run one again as a second car in the future...

i love the E39 model, but i may be slightly biased here and go with the E60 in M-Sport trim!

although i do like the F10, i await the M-Sport version to see if i like it more than the E60.

    E39 for me. I've always wanted an E39 530d M sport since I was a wee lad.

E34 followed very closely by E39.

    No option for F07?!

E39 without a doubt. Fantastic looking car.

We could do a thread for what's your favourite Skoda Superb, but it'd only be 2 or 3 cars long (unless you count the pre-war ones)...
    No option for F07?!

I'd have had to instantly ban anyone who voted for one of those monstrosities over one of the fine saloons above. :D

Had an E12 many moons ago but prefer the E39

Jesus, the E39 is running away with it!

E39 for me. I don't like the 5 series 'family pic' as the E39 doesn't look it's best without the clear indicators and angel eye headlights. I saw an F07 the other day, it's an ugly beast.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

E39 is gonna win this. People are conservative though, if you asked this question 5 years ago (when the E39 had already been around for 4 years) the E34 would have won by a landslide.

    I've owned both BTW :)

E39 without a doubt, before the horrors of i-Drive , back when it had a decent entertainment system, a timeless look, all it needed between 96 and 03 was facelifts, take a 97 or so e39 , put the clear lights, angel eyes etc.. on it and it will still look modern. wonderful cars,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,106 ✭✭✭SpannerMonkey

based solely on looks it has to be the E34;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,912 ✭✭✭I Was VB

The only BMW that has ever 'done' it for me is the E34, and probably ever will.

E39 M5, probably the best car in the world, everrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,567 ✭✭✭daveharnett

    e28.
Any of the older posters have an opinion on which was actually the best all round car (in comparison to the competition of the time)? Any of the older generations as/more significant as the e39?

I agree. Anything after the E39 looks like a pile of poo inside and outside.
The E34 is also a very good looking car.

E39 all day. My dad owned a few back in '02-'03 and I just love the design. I'd love to get an M5 when I finish up in college.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,718 ✭✭✭Matt Simis

Bit unfair on the e60 that the family pic is without MSport, when the reality is that the majority of e60's sold (UK at least) have the MSport kit.

    e60 M5 (/ Msport kit)
    greym51.jpg

And equally unfair on the e39 as its pre-facelift and IMO, looks kinda bland without the MSport kit.

E34 without a doubt, followed closely by the E39 (both sport packs of course)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,213 ✭✭✭PrettyBoy

The Sport kit makes such a difference. To be honest, all of the original (or non-facelifted) 5 series look seriously bland in standard guise. Any idea on when we can expect to see the F10 kit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,263 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

I'm biased and went for the e39. The e34 would be a very close second. The pictures are very unflattering in the original post.

E39 for me, but only the facelift one. This one imo was infinitely nicer that the pre facelift model.

The E39 is and always will be "The Ultimate Driving Machine".

As this is about the best looking rather than best car, I went for the E12 - The shark-based forward leaning front grille was a great looking design. Interesting how the nose has got wider and the eyes squintier over the years. The more recent ones with Tory MP eyebrows don't do anything for me.

Have had an E12 and an E28

E12 was better than a Merc W115 or W123, only car as good as it was an Opel Commodore. E28 a lot better in handling, economy and long distance comfort better than a W123, had a 524d and 524td, both were better than a W124 250D or 300D. Had a W124 300TE, best allround car I ever had.

Incidentally I knew someone who was part of the development team for M5 engines, he could have had an E60 M5 as a company car but he prefers his own E34 M5 (the 340 bhp version).

Voted here for the E12, torn between that and the E28. Hope one day to have an E12 Alpina, E28 524td and an E34 M5 Touring in the garage....

I'll leave ye with this.......... although it looks better in Alpina Blue
