Security e-mail from eBay

    Hi, everybody
I purchased a DS game for my daughter on eBay early last week, using "Buy It Now". I paid by PayPal, and got an email from the seller thanking me for payment and the game would be posted to me with 24 hours, then would take 7-15 days for delivery.

I just got this security e-mail from eBay (genuine, as my actual name and e-mail address was shown on it):
    Hello anyusername (anybody@anymail.com),

We're writing to let you know that we removed the listing for the following item that you won or bid on:

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

To help protect you, we removed this listing until we can confirm that the seller is not putting you or other eBay members at risk.

If you've already paid for this item through eBay, you can open a case in our Resolution Center to get your money back. All you need to do is click the link below, and select the "I haven't received it yet" option. This will guide you through the process to get a refund.

    http://resolutioncenter.ebay.com

If you won the item but haven't paid yet, don't pay for it.

If the seller offers you the item outside of eBay, we strongly encourage you to not accept the offer. These types of transactions are extremely risky and are not covered by eBay buyer protection programs.

If you didn't pay through eBay, read the following information:

-- If you paid by Western Union or MoneyGram, contact the company directly (Western Union 800-325-6000 or MoneyGram 800-926-9400).
-- If you paid by check, contact your bank to stop payment.
-- If you paid by credit card, contact your credit card company to dispute the charge.

We want to make sure you get your money back safely and quickly.

    Thanks,

    eBay

Did anybody ever get an e-mail like this? I'm worried as to what may have happened to have aroused suspicion at eBay offices.

Also, it sounds like this game is in the post anyway so I don't see why I should cancel payment.

Basically what happened is that ebay/paypal are suspecting that the ebay seller is doing fradulent transactions. Usually when they do something like this they are right. I doubt you will be receiving anything so it's best to cancel payment as soon as possible before the seller withdraws the money.

Thanks very much, partyatmygaff. I'll get my money back straightaway then.

I worried if I got my money back, there would be trouble as the seller has my name and address!!!

Doubt it, it's not as if you bought a car. It's only a DS game :P

What's more likely is that the DS games he is selling are fakes.

While I'm sure its genuine what you have said is no proof that it is ;) . You'd need to check you had the msg in My eBay Messages to be completely sure.

This might be better in the Online Buying and Auctions section?

I've never seen an option for the buyer to cancel a payment Paypal, is this possible?

I doubt it, otherwise a buyer could cancel a payment after the seller has sent the item.

what you need to do is log into paypal (if that is how u paid for the item) and lodge a dispute. the seller has a week to respond, he probably wont, and after that week u can escalate to a claim. paypal will usually give you the full refund.
had to do this last week myself cause of some dodgy seller on ebay

Opening a dispute, of course you can't cancel a payment just like that.

well it was you who said 'cancel payment', opening a dispute isn't the same as cancelling payment as you aren't guaranteed your money back...

Seriously... Don't use  because it makes you come across as condescending.

In these circumstances you would be almost guaranteed to win the dispute so you could almost call it cancelling the payment.

OK, I went through the necessary steps to get my money back, and finally got my refund from Paypal 2 days ago.

Then - guess what???? The game arrived in the post today and it works perfectly!

I feel bad for getting the refund - has this happened to anybody on Boards? How do I give the money back to the seller?

It could still be fake, even if it works, most fakes would work. I got a 2 dodgy microsd cards before christmas and got a full refund, they did not work, I think they could be formatted in some way and maybe work for a while. The seller never contacted me so I kept them and have not looked at them since. I did not want to return them as he might sell them on again.

If you type in the game name and something like "how to spot a fake DS game" into google you should get hits. They probably have pictures showing fake cartridges etc. If it is definitely fake I would not pay them.

You probably can't give the money to the seller now anyway, so I'd just treat it as a "one of those things" situations, where you just go with the flow. It will cost you money to send it back, and the seller probably doesn't want the hassle.

Contact the seller and pay again, it's the only decent thing to do.

even if they are fakes? a fake might go corrupt down the line.

Thanks for those images, Rubadub - I think that game is real!

I got onto eBay and appealed their decision to refund me:D - the only option I seemed to have and explained my reason. They haven't got back to me yet. I agree with Rasta it is the decent thing to do - i'll wait and see.
