The Spirit of the Marathon

Thanks for the link, but I thought it was dreadful. It captured everything that was wrong with the marathon. Even the way they pronounced the word marathohhhhhn really annoyed me. But others might enjoy it..

+1 on the old dude, came across as a great character.
Also enjoyed the parts with Deena Kastor.

I struggled with this (Spirit of the Marathon) I have to say. Didn't get past part 2 of the youtube slices. However, whilst searching for it I came across the following which was very interesting - even just for the sheer madness/courage (thin line separating same) of some of those taking part.

Thanks for posting this. I'm going through the clips now. Amazing

EDIT: Just finished them. Thats the most inspirational thing I've ever seen. Thanks again SJ.

Do you agree about the thin line? Part of the time I'm amazed by the people in a good way and other times in a bad way... Also, I'm left asking questions like is walking this marathon entirely really such a feat? Isn't the achievement mainly in the running?

It is a fine line alright. I mean they must be a little crazy. What makes them decide that that race would be a good idea? Everything about it says its a pretty dumb thing to do but they just thrive on reaching their limits and digging deep. Tough as nails.

About the running/walking achievement........I don't think it matters. The heat, the distance, the hills. I've got a hangover today and the drive to McDonalds nearly killed me :D

The guy who got his toe-nails surgically removed so they wouldn't trouble him in future ultras was a particular stand out scene...

That was awesome, and quite frankly terrifying, but it kinda makes me want to try an ultra at some point a long way down the road...

Only caught up with Spirit of the Marathon over the weekend on netflix. I'd pretty much forgotten about it but stumbled over it and had some time. The good bits could have been condensed into about 25 mins though. A lot of it was twoddle. Must get myself one of those water treadmills though. When is the lidl special on those.

Forgot that I was the one who posted it. I really enjoyed it at the time as I was on cloud nine after finishing Rotterdam. Something tells me that I may not enjoy it quite so much now, but I wont ruin my opinion of it by watching it again.

There was one particular moment I found a bit mad though. When the coach was talking to about 20 joggers saying something along the lines of "you've paid your $100 entry fee, so the longer you take to finish the more bang for your buck you are getting".

Anyone ever watch Saint Ralph? Nice quirky little film about a kid who believes if he wins the Boston marathon he will earn a miracle needed for his mother. I think there is a clip on you tube of it.

Again courtesy of netflix I'm halfway through a film called the Robber about a runner who can't stop running and robbing banks. The latter is the only thing that gets his HRM to spike :) Sub-titled Austrian film. Funny to see him come in from robbing a bank and connecting his watch up to the computer to upload his stats for his latest run/robbery.

I can't see either on Netflix , is it the U.s. Connection you ate using ?

Yeah, sorry. Got onto the US one early on so I could get the latest Breaking Bads.

Did so by signing up to playmo.tv, but I think its going off its free offer soon.

Happened to get a copy of this film during the weekend and gave it a watch, seriously impressive.

Here's a tip, do not ever say to your other half that you want to take part in a Ultramarathon (only 50km) while she's watching this film with you........she'll get overly worried :pac::pac:

There's a decent running documentary on Netflix, Running the Sahara. Three men run from West coast of Africa to Egypt.

Worth a watch. Particularly for the last 20 mins.

PS. I was surprise it was 02 who posted this thread. ;)

Thanks a bunch, that answers my question. :D

To add to the list, there are a few more that come highly recommended, though I haven't seen them yet myself.

One is "Indulgence" about ultra runner Anton Krupicka.

Another one is "Unbreakable" about the 2010 Western States 100 race, coincidentally also featuring Krupicka amongst others.

I've been tempted to get a copy of Unbreakable, costs 30e from the states though :(

Maybe this has been posted before. It's The Western States 100 again but done by a guy with just a fruit diet.
Can't be right surely....race looks very very tough.

Why not? Michael Arnstein is a well known runner with a 2:28 marathon PB and several 100 mile races (including a few wins) under his belt.
