trying to see what people think of the album

Really like the new album after my 3rd listen not as much as antidotes but its still a quality album. Is it just me or does Yannis voice seem a bit different in tlf than it did in antidotes ?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 6,755 ✭✭✭A V A

ahhh i dont know for some reason its not growing on me after a few listens there is a few really good great sounding songs that didnt make the album just like a few didnt make antidotes!!!! oxford and o-funk didnt make it and they sound great !!!

yes his voice sounds alot different !! i like it but wish the songs were more up beat

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

Listened to it a few times now and i'm delighted with it. I didn't want to hear another Antidotes, not because it wasn't a great album because it was, but because I knew the way they creative music that they can create great range, and I think with this they definitely do.

Yannis's voice is a bit subtler in a lot of tracks here as opposed to some of the shouty(but awesome) songs they had on Antidotes. I'm actually disappointed if I really like an album right on first listen because it means I probably wont give it time to discover it fully.

I think this is one that deserves a few listens and for me, at least, it was definitely worth it. The wait was very worthwhile.

By the way, how funky is the first few seconds of Miami!! : )

hmmmmmmmmmmm i dont know its like im trying to make my self like the album ?????:S:S:S i like the old foals and im all up liking the new style and some parts its sounds kool but its like its going no were but im sure after another few listens ill like it . but it takes me along time to get use or to like some bands tho but shouldnt have to do it with a band that i listened to every single day and it never got old

for some reason the likes of this orient is the type of song you would see being played on bbc one match of the day of some bbc 3 program or those kind of programs and im not into that atall really and i an interview with zane low one of the lads and yannis said when they played their previous stuff from atidotes on tv people didnt get them and the tings they played and they got criticized but with this album they said the wrote it in a way its not to dark and mellow but they also wanted to be an album they could play on tv etc i didnt really like it that they said that :S:S:S

im kind of getting their with first two songs but as i said before i jjust wish some songs i was looking forward to hearing on the album didnt make it on the album and they sound amazing
the b sides on antidotes were amazing and some were better than some of them that made the final cut tbh i listen to some of the b side more than songs that are on atidotes

haven't listened to it, but if it continues on like the two videos they've released from it so far it's going to be one hell of an album.

On first listen I was little disappointed as Antidotes is one of my favourite album of all time but Im glad to report that its growing on me. The two standout tracks for me are 'After Glow' and 'Alabaster'. Its by no means an instant hit but Id be of the thinking that thats the way they intended it to be.

Im already looking forward to a deluxe edition of the album much like they did with with Antidotes. Couldnt believe they omitted such gems such as 'Astronauts n all', 'Mathletics' and 'Hummer' from it. Cant wait to see what was left on the cutting room floor of 'Total Life Forever'.

Haven't heard anything about them playing the Ambassador. There hasn't been a music gig there in a while.

If you're talking about the Academy gig in May then it's an invite-only free gig which tickets can only be gotten through www.heinekenmusic.ie but application for tickets is closed.

I think Heineken Music's Ed might have some left for boardsies but I'm sure he'll be announcing how to apply for those shortly.

I wasn't too mad about Spanish Sahara when I first heard it. Hopefully the album grows on me. Gonna get it tonight. :)

Yeah heard them on McCloone tonight. Lead singer reminds me a bit of Robert Smith from the Cure. Good stuff though

I've only listened to the album once so far but I'm really disappointed. I really don't like Yannis' voice. What I liked about Antidotes was that Yannis kept his singing to a minimum and let the instruments do the work. I couldn't notice any catchy rhythms and riffs on this one because he's trying so hard with his voice, it overshadows everything else.

I'll give it another go though but they've definitely changed way too much.

There was a little making of the album thing from Foals on the 11th Hour last night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 173 ✭✭Fago123

Best album I've listened to so far this year. Huge improvement on their debut.

Took me a few listens to get into it (as did Antidotes) but that seems to be a theme with them. Black Gold the standout track for me at the moment although it changes daily.

Hopefully get to see them live when they play a proper gig (none of this green energy lottery tickets malarkey)

I think it's a great album. Not sure if I prefer it to Antidotes though. Standout tracks for me were Spanish Sahara, This Orient, Alabaster and Miami.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 688 ✭✭✭Sútalún

Have to say the album's really grown on me after initial sceptisism. I've been physically consuming the National's album over the last few days so haven't listened. However gave it a few spins last night. It works really well as an album, a definite, though quite different progression from Antidotes. The start to Miami is unreal. I literally rewind and re-listen to it sometimes,

Have only listened to it once, but I really like it. Was a big fan of their first album but I felt it was a bit pretentious at points. They seem to have matured a bit.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,543 ✭✭✭JerryHandbag

Gave this a listen tonight, really impressed. Big fan of Antidotes, this is different but in a good way. I thought the lead singers voice sounded uncannily like Fleet Foxes in places, perhaps because I was listening to Fleet Foxes before hand but there you go! And yes Miami is some seriously funky stuff.

i love this album so much. i was hooked from the first time i listened to it. blue blood's my favourite track.such a wonderful progression from Antidotes.

Anyone get the bonus disk ? Decided to pop it in last night as I was driving home and some of the mixes are fantastic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,508 ✭✭✭ElaElaElano

Personally I prefer Antidotes but this is a classy piece of work, no doubt. Miami is seriously addictive.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 6,755 ✭✭✭A V A

i agrre man . . . . . but everyday each song from this album turns into a banger !!!!! great album for a party i played it all the way through last night just sitting around having a few beers and its great for that sort of mood

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 530 ✭✭✭Placid_Casual

I think its just ok. I really liked Spanish Sahara so I was looking forward to the album but I have to say SS is my favourite track on it - so its been slightly disappointing overall.
Nothing's really grabbed me, except maybe Blue Blood. I found Miami irritating at first but i'm starting to come around to it. It was the same with Cassius and I ended up loving that, so who knows.
Maybe more listening is required but at the moment I have to say I much prefer Antidotes.

Antidotes was a fantastic album with some stomping tunes on it. Yea, cassius was annoying, and there were 1/2 pants tracks, but the rest was quality.

this album has the ever fabled second album syndrome. Its an album of obvious jams just thrown out there cos they were a hot topic. There is consistancy in it, something that antidotes didnt have. None of those tracks interest me in anyway.

It boils down to two options. An average group of tracks, or a set of great songs with a few fillers. The later is better to me.

    New album is ****e imo.

Wouldn't go this far but it's not the album i thought it was going to become, a decent follow up and a needed shake up but it's lacking the killer tracks.

yea i've just given the album a second listen to.

Blue blood is a very generous ok. The album is actually worse than i previously said, its not even average imo now.

Very dissapointed in them, they've really clipped that drummers wings with the tripe they've put forward.

    Video for "Miami"

Truly strange video, but in a weird way it suits the song. Great track though.

It really is odd alright! Don't really like it to be honest, don't like videos that take away from the song or demerit it. And in my opinion, this one does.

How does it demerit the song?

Just think the "humour" aspect to it takes away from what a great song it is. I like my music videos serious. I'm weird like that. Don't take it personally!

I've given their two albums a few listens and I just don't rate them. This Orient and Red Socks Pugie are decent but to me they are quite overrated.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 6,755 ✭✭✭A V A

that has to be the most random video iv ever seen :S
im not sure if i like it though but its different to what foals have done in the ppast video wise but kind of was done well :S got a bit weirded out with all the stroking of the muscles haha

TLF is so much better than Antidotes I think, two totally different sounds mind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 900 ✭✭✭Joe_Dull

I loved Antidotes, but TLF is a completely different album - and a better one, in my opinion. The chilled out vibe is great and they maintain the music's dance-y quality. Plus, Miami is a tune and a half :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 176 ✭✭Sir Graball

Really have to give this album a few listens. Stand out track imo is Black Gold. Yeah vocalist does sound like Robert Smith but with a way inferior vocal range!!:P

Also some of the lyrics on this are a bit naff. IMO Two Dancers a far superior album but Foals may well win the Mercury with this offering!!!

TLF is better than Antidotes by far. They're completely different though. You can't directly compare "Cassius" to "After Glow". It's a totally different approach, and it's far, far better. Contender for album of the year.

That said, I'm wondering what the B-Sides are. There's got to be another "Dearth" or "Astronauts n'All" in here. This Orient's single didn't release with anything too interesting except for "Tron (Kieran Hebden Version)". (I love the Kieran Hebden versions, good to see that Foals are still releasing them)

EDIT: Ohh, there's B-Sides on the Miami EP.

Miami. Recorded live. Acoustic, and there's a female backing vocalist. AWESOME. (worth noting it's not on the Miami EP on iTunes. Huh?)

New B-Side track, "The Forked Road". It's one of their slower tracks, like Spanish Sahara. It's got a unusual sound to it though, darker than Foals' usual.

New B-Side track, "Wear & Tear". Another song that clearly wouldn't survive on Antidotes. Clear that all of their new material has the more matured Total Life Forever style to it.

These guys blew me away at Electric Picnic. Was beginning to think I had chosen the wrong gig to go to after the first few songs didn't really get the crowd going but suddenly they burst out of the traps and didn't relent until the very last note! One of my highlights from the weekend.

been to 6 EPs now and that will still stand out as a highlight among them all. Very memorable. Life affirming stuff.

    I won't have the full order correct but they played;

    Total Life Forever
    Cassius
    Hummer
    Miami
    Balloons
    Red Sock Pugie
    Alabaster
    Spanish Sahara
    Electric Bloom
    Two Steps Twice

*Not sure if Black Gold was in the set or not
