Ive a question on the neck..been workin hard at the gym for nearly 2 yrs but my neck hasnt changed much at the front despite shrugs deads upright rows and even neck lifts with a plate. The back has put on a nice bit of mass but the front is pencilish. Ive 2 photos added to show what I'm on about
the first pic the guys built but his neck isnt outstanding
whereas pic 2 the tanned lad notice the front of his neck moves outwards at both sides. Out of all the exercises Ive tried ive never felt a burn here or doms next day, cant seem to hit this area with any exercise.

You are doing the right exercises however your larger muscles are dong most of the work.

You could try getting a neck harness that you can hang weights off, you lift the weight up predominantly with the larger trapezius muscles, but if you hold the weight at the top you should work your smaller weaker sternocleidomastoids ( I think these are the ones you are talking about).

As a caveat I would recommend you have someone show you how to do this exercise as many gym instructors will freak out if they see you trying this especially; if your doing it wrong.

Those pics are of 2 different poses - the 2nd is more for showing off your traps. There isnt really much you can do for the front of your neck - there arent a lot of muscles there

Thanks for the replies, scott Im not sure a harness will do it, and podge it may show the area off more in the 2nd pic but was using to highlight what Im on about. Some people seem to have that shape to their neck without doing any weights at all so im thinking its a genetic thing..can definitely make the neck stronger with a harness tho so may give it a go

I was wondering the same thing. Traps seem to be the new biceps, there's been a few threads lately about training them.

OP, the guy in the 2nd pic is posing to show off his traps more, that's the real difference. Whatever the issue is, I think you can solve it with deadlifts and squats.
