Looks more like it after a poor series last time round..

Wonder how much the BBC shelled out to get Elba back for ... *checks notes* ... four episodes of this? The trailer's certainly slick enough, befitting the actor's larger status these days.

Psychiatrist's husband judging by wedding photo I reckon.. and she stitched up one of her patients to be the "killer".

EDIT: Nope, watched that back.. got them reversed!

Bat**** crazy, far-fetched but good fun..

    Welcome back DCI!

Bit OTT right from the beginning IMO - tied to the chair and severely beaten, and then "in one bound he was free", to outwit/overpower a bunch of criminal heavies and not a bother on him? Yeah. I didn't see the point of that.

Some of the rest was good though. Some real suspense there, like with the girl on the bus. "Luther" does that really well.

Good episode all right. The bus attack sequence was the highlight but Luther pretending to know what a hat-pin is was a close second.

No. Her husband seems to be the killer.

She set up a patient to lead the police away from her husband.

I think most of Luther is OTT.

I think it is a cross between the seriousness of shows like Prime Suspect and all out comedy of Police Squad/Naked Gun type shows.

Did you notice the "Mind your Head" sign on the girder that they chained the lad with the neck bomb to.

I missed episode 2. Where can I see a rerun?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,375 ✭✭✭McBain11

Thought the scene on the bus in the first episode was brilliant. It's rare enough that I'm thinking 'ah jaysus move woman, just get off the feckin bus! He's coming for you!'

Luther is always a bit far fetched, that's the beauty of it imo. In saying that the older you get the more you realise a lot of real life is pretty far fetched as well :-)

Have really enjoyed the first couple of episodes. Good to have it back. Might even give the whole series a rewatch soon.

Bump... Anyone know? BBC player doesn't work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,607 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

The BBC player is the only legitimate way.

Netflix have the first 4 seasons, so they might get this one when the whole season ends.

I've a sinking feeling that either
    Benny
    or
    Mark
    (am thinking latter) will be
shot by Cornelius in front of Alice by the end of this!
    :(

Beeb, stop doing these "next time" promos that make things too easy to work out.

    Poor Benny! :(

Luther is always great to get you shouting at the telly!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,378 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Been a helluva lot better than season 4 anyways..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,840 ✭✭✭brian_t

So that's what a bone saw looks like.

I watched the third season of Lucky Man recently and I think that it and Luther have a very similar theme tune.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,378 ✭✭✭✭Basq

That last episode was all a bit underwhelming..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,200 ✭✭✭Gavlor

Just finishing second episode. Now I remember why I stopped watching the previous series. And for the love of Jesus someone buy the man a new coat, imagine the bang off it!

    Edited to avoid spoiling!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 782 ✭✭✭Cartel Mike

    Naw.
The writer of this has done stellar work but he's ran out of ideas for these characters and with 4 shows every few years dealing with one case it lacks focus . Glad the Alice character is done now as she was just annoying in this (to me anyway).
It had a real low budget feel to it. Not a series to watch over again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,322 ✭✭✭sham69

its far fetched but I love it.
    Really enjoyed the series overall.
Yeah the final episode was a bit disappointing but I've seen worse.
    Looking forward to more..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,967 ✭✭✭✭Nalz

Too far fetched and disappointing this time around..

Won't be in a hurry to watch it anymore come out.

    Roll on line of duty!

It started off great but finished on a damp squib.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,055 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Yeah poor finish to this season but I still love it. The Alice character went on far too long. Hopefully the next series is better than this one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,108 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I enjoyed it for the most part, but the longer the show goes on, the more the balance between Luther going police stuff and Luther doing dodgy stuff tips in the wrong direction. In terms of the police stuff this season, they had a great story, twisted villain, great performances from the killer and his wife and there was probably more there that could have been explored. But it was sidelined for the last three episodes in favour of the Alice/Cornelius stuff which went on too long and ended poorly.

I would have even preferred to have seen more of Shenck trying to investigate what Luther was up to. Even him finding out Luther was in league with Alice really ended up going nowhere.

Still though, great performances throughout and overall it was a welcome return, and better than the last series (which I barely remember at all). Would still look forward to it coming back and it's half making me want to rewatch the whole thing, especially with all the references to past characters and events.

I hope it's now done and dusted. Hard to see much point to it, ludicrous as a policer (the readiness of the gangster to off Luther is comical, villains know you never kill a cop), fantastical as a horror thriller, Ruth might even be dead this time! Time to move on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 630 ✭✭✭mikekerry

    thought it was garbage.
    alice was very, very annoying.
I think it's fair to say luther himself would be up before a few committees!

Probably the weakest season so far with a poor ending.Still it has a great cast.

Finally got to watch the last season which I did enjoy more then say the last few seasons of Sherlock. But looking up IMDb to see if there is going to be another series and was surprised to see that they are developing a Luther Movie, which I don't really see being a good idea. Luther works best as a mini series so hope they abandon that idea and go back to the 4-5 episode mini series.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,300 ✭✭✭✭razorblunt

I think its jumped the shark anyway so it almost doesn't matter what they do.
BBC have a habit of flogging things to death, they'd done it with Sherlock too and are well on their way to doing something similar to the Peaky Blinders.

Has this actually been confirmed? A Luther movie has been banded around as something Idris Elba / Neil Cross both want to do for the last 10 years, but has never went further than that.

    (from 2011, first question)

Not yet but found this article on digital spy, they don't really know what they are going to do, some interviews they say it's a 7 series arc but from this article they said it was a big success viewer wise so I'd say we will get another season rather then a movie.

Idris Elba has again teased the idea of turning his cult BBC detective drama Luther into a feature, more than a year after Season 5 aired on British television.

The actor told a press junket for Season 3 of his Sky comedy In The Long Run that there are no “formal plans” for another Luther series, according to Sky News.

But Elba added: “I’ve made it very clear that I’d like to see Luther come back as a film. And I can tell you this, that we are this close to making a film of Luther.”

started watching this but struggling with it - have only watched 1 episode.. but find the acting v dramatic and not in a good way.. should I stay with it? is it actually good as a detective crime drama? loved Prime Suspect, Unforgotten, Line of Duty.. so the bench mark is high

Luther: The Fallen Sun due to drop March 2023

I don't agree that it's rubbish. There's certainly a huge dropoff after season 1, which was top notch, but it's a very good show in comparison to others even after season one.

Why do they always have to give the villans comic book type features - the villan here has ridiculous hair. usually its pathetic facial hair that just isn't needed and looks terrible.
