So xtravision website says it's on sale today, amazon's saying 26th. Does anyone know for sure? Also, any information on what extras are on the disc? There doesn't look to be much in this release. Maybe more with an extended edition later on...

DVD releases are in the UK on Monday, whereas we get them the Friday before it.

Absolutely zero special features whatsoever AFAIK!

Wait a few months for the Super Happy Extended Edition!

Am I right in thinking that there's zero extras on this release?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,560 ✭✭✭✭Kess73

It is in Xtravision, Tesco etc now.

Had a look on the back of the blu ray box. very basic disk in terms of extras.

Since James Cameron has already announced a special extended edition for cinemas (since apparently Alice in Wonderland stole their 3D thunder before they could make enough money [/raised eyebrow]), I'm guessing it is only a matter of time before that comes to DVD too. I'd say this release is kind of like the Lord of the Rings theatrical cut releases - quick release, followed by a more substantial one in a few months. Also, a special 3D edition is surely on the way too.

Extended edition? Christ.. 3 hours was more than enough!

yea, although 4 months is pretty much the norm now a days for big movies

Yeah.. I was taken aback when I saw posters advertising it in Xtra-Vision.

It's just 4 months after theatrical release, whereas the majority of films are closer to 6 month I'd reckon.

Yup. There shall be a re-release with six - yes, six! - more minutes of vital plot development and blue people ;) I would tend to agree with you about 3 hours being overlong - won't get into that, the main Avatar thread was one heated discussion! - but at the same time I know Cameron is a shrewd businessman and any sort of re-release will probably still rake in quite a bit of money, so I can at least see his logic. Same with any DVD releases - multiple versions will maximise profits for sure.

It's 25 euro in hmv but when you buy anything over 10 euro it's 20 euro
    30 euro in extraVisson

Isn't 13 weeks to be the gap between cinema and dvd/blu ray release for major releases from this year onwards?

That was announced earlier this year and caused a fuss of the DVD release date set for Alice In Wonderland

Don't wanna get off-topic but I really don't get this new trend of releasing Blu-ray / DVD combos!

Friend: Oh, you have Avatar? That's meant to look amazing!
Me: Yeah.. it's incredible and I have the Blu-ray and DVD!

Me: So which d'ya wanna watch?
Friend: (slams head off desk) Oh... I don't know - haven't you got a nice 200MB WMV rip I can watch on a 3" screen!?

Bought the Blu-ray / DVD Combos of Toy Story 1 & 2.. the DVD's will never be touched!

I like them, purely because not everyone has access to a blu-ray player, so if you want to watch it at someone elses house then at least having the dvd will come in handy at some stage

The problem I have is that companies will use it to justify the higher cost of Blu-ray's.

Wouldn't you prefer a euro or two off as opposed to a DVD of the same film?

That's never gonna happen though! :(

I'll give Avatar another chance when the Blu-Ray becomes cheap. I don't know how much plot Cameron can stuff into an extra 6 minutes, considering
the amount of plot he didn't have in 3 hours.
    :pac::pac:
wakka wakka! Spoilered a snippy remark :D

I imagine he'll just splice 6 minutes of

    in somewhere!

Official reason given by MGM and shared by others is that DVD owners may buy the multipacks as they lan to buy a blu ray player in the future.

Personally I think a doublesided blu/dvd hybrid would've made more sense, but then they wanted to take advantage of double dippers.

For me the advantage of multipacks is that my blu is downstairs and dvd player is in my bedroom, so I can watch either format depending on where I am

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 30,019 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

I'd watch the extra six minutes if it was just David Attenborugh talking about Planet Pandora!

I must admit I like the combo packs too, I'm the only one in my house who will watch Blu Ray so DVD is better for everyone else. My four disc Up set is a little ridiculous though :)

Smart/cynical move by the suppliers then, thinking we'll buy/rent it now and then fork out again for the set with special features later on. Booo. I'm going to wait. With LOTR, the extra featurettes were as big a draw as the movie itself. Same here

I'm assuming they're a not-very-clever attempt to get people like myself interested who otherwise don't plan on going anywhere near Blu-Ray any time soon. They're doing the same thing with digital copies - you can buy a Blu-Ray and get the digital copy along with it. Which, ok, is slightly better than not having a digital copy available at all, but frankly why would I want to buy a physical copy in the first place if I'm looking for a digital copy?

You have to wonder at the thinking (or lack thereof) behind these sorts of ideas.

With LOTR, I waited until the extended editions were available on DVD, and will do the same with Avatar. Some of my friends intend to buy both (as they did with LOTR). More money than sense :)

The single disc edition is to coincide with "Earth Day"
So basically we have 2 copies of the same film being released at different times thus doubling the amount of packaging.

    Happy Earth Day indeed

Mine arrived from Zavvi this morning. New TV and surround sound due to arrive Monday.
I'm looking forward to it I must say. Never got to see it in 3D in the cinema so I held off on the Cams, Ts's, screeners, R5s etc. to watch it for the first time, at home, on Bluray, with fresh popcorn and cold beer in hand :D

For the record, it says on the front: "Also inside, A DVD copy of Avatar, for in the home, in the car, wherever!"

2D, eh? Lower those expectations!! Should look incredibly sharp on Blu because 3D blurs the background so your eyes know where to focus.

I cant watch this again unless it's in 3D. I just can't. Going back to 2D is...a waste.

    Hi Folks,

For those of you interested I thought I'd let you know there seems to be major problems being experienced by customers world wide whom have bought or rented Avatar on Blu Ray. I rented it myself yesterday (Friday morning) from Extra-vision and found I was unable to play it on my HTPC Blu ray player using Arcsoft Total Media Theatre 3.

It's seems to be affecting all Blu Ray regions. See some user comments on amazon - http://www.amazon.com/Will-play-many-Ray-players/forum/Fx2NBHP9W1IZXFF/Tx2KGMUN91X6WP0/2?_encoding=UTF8&asin=B002HEXVSK

Apparently Fox Studio's decided to introduced a new DRM copy protection with this title and it seems many of the current Blu Ray players even those that are up to date with the latest firmware can't play it. The good old playstation seem to be playing fine providing it's got the latest update.

The new copy protection apparently 6 months in the making was introduced to prevent illegal coping, however according to the developer of a certain copy protection bypass software one or more of the US version of the disk have been cracked 24 hour before Avator was released. Another well know software that can by-pass copy protection is also reporting success on some US versions of the disks. As a result there are now HD copies of Avatar available for illegal download while 1000's of legal paying customers who just want to see the movies at home in High Def are left waiting for Blu Ray player manufacturers to issue firmware updates.

It seems like a right mess. It might be a title to avoid for a couple of weeks until updates are issued.

easy. I'll buy blu-ray with digital copies so that I can easily load the digital copy onto my ipad. Avatar will, I think, look fookin amazing on the ipad. Including digital copies is a brilliant and convenient idea.

Well I think it is to try and win over customers who havent starting buying Bluyrays yet. I know people who have a PS3 but wouldn't bother buying blurays because its not at their main TV, or because they've a DVD player in the bedroom etc. Or people who are kind of 'in between' deciding if they're going to buy a Bluray player and switch over.

They're not aimed at people who already buy Bluray movies, but I agree its annoying when there is no standalone version available.

Yes, the best way to experience one of the most visually stunning films is to watch it on a small screen which doesn't even offer stereo sound.

I've never used any digital copy in any of my Blu Rays though the DVDs can be very handy to give to family members who have yet to buy a Blu Ray player.

Jeez, good work, inconveniencing the paying public and failing to keep it off the internet. Just saw it there, yep it's all over the bloody net in HD.

I wish IMDB could take a poll for how good they think the film is in 2D :D:D

I bought the blu ray this morning and I have just watched it. I originally saw it in the Savoy and thought it was fantastic. I can report no issues with the disc. As for the picture and audio quality they are reference quality and without doubt the best to date. I cannot see myself going 3D for a while as I forked out on a new TV 7 months ago so I decided to buy now as I like the movie. I didn't really miss the 3D effect as the PQ is that good. I will look forward to seeing it again in 3D but not for a while.

    See here:

    Umm...yeah?

I said the film would look amazing on the ipad (which it will. Regardless what you think of the device, the image quality of the screen is something that according to reviews is pretty spectacular), not that it would be "the best" way to watch it. The best way to watch it would be on your great big HD TV with surround sound on bluray, you know, the second half of the "bluray / digital copy" purchase.

Unfortunately though I can't carry my HDTV with me on long distance plane journeys, so the digital version of the movie is awesome. The point is that just because you don't have a need for something personally doesn't mean that it's not a good idea.

Now, now Darko, no need for pointless bickering - Branoic never said it was the 'best' way to watch the film, just a good way to watch it (anything portable isn't my cup of tea, but the Ipad screen is rather pretty for a portable device). We may not agree, but let's be civil about it, ok?

Wasn't bickering merely pointing out that watching Avatar on a screen as small as the ipad is redundant. I've been playing with an ipad the past few weeks and whiles it's serviceable watching films on it really is a waste. It's fine for watching intimate indie character studies but for a film which relies on visuals to such a degree as Avatar then it diminished the experience immensely.

I believe that David Lynch put it best

I don't disagree with you, and I have always agreed with the good man Lynch's views on the issue. I never watch films on a screen that small, and I am extremely indifferent to the Ipad despite being an Apple fanatic. But you did call Branoic up on saying it was the "best way to experience Avatar" which was never said. Good to get a bit of discussion going about the best ways to watch films (hell, I'm as much a big screen purist as you'll get, even TV takes something significant away for me) but no need for untrue accusations in the process :)

If that isn't petty bickering then I'm a Dutchman! I guess your cut-off point for "redundant" is a lot higher than other people's. It's not like it's a classic iPod screen. Each to their own, eh? Or not really! :pac::pac:

Not referring to you, but when people on the net talk about the "only way to watch something" it smacks of film snobbery. Sure it'd be most preferable to have your own iMAX 3D screen...

Many would say the best way to watch it was in the cinema. Anything isn't the same. But of course it isn't the same thats just duuuuhhh.

Alright, no more 'bickering' in this thread guys (had to delete a post there). Debate and discourse is fine, and actively encouraged! Just everyone be civil about it. There is clearly a debate between the positives and negatives of viewing Avatar in specific formats - I myself got most of what I think I will get out of the film in one cinema viewing, and have little interest in revisiting Pandora on a small screen anytime soon. For me the visuals - far and away the most compelling aspect of the film - won't quite have the same effect on a smaller screen. I can see where everyones coming from though - I would be an advocate of digital copies, as I think the consumer should be given multiple formats as an incentive for actually buying the thing.

Is there a 3D edition for home. We've a kids DVD, an episode of Shrek which is 3D, doesn't work with any of the glasses we got at the movies though.

No 3D yet. The only 3D that will work on most TVs though is the red and blue old school stuff, and from stuff I've seen in work (Call of the Wild 3D OMG!) it's pretty crappy. If you want a proper 3D version of Avatar - surely on the way - you'll have to upgrade to one of the crazy expensive new TVs just now coming on the market.
