Any around interested in some OW swimming over the next few months, maybe meet up once a week. I am thinking the resevoir on the liffey here might be a good spot. From a safety point I do not want to head out on my own.

I'd be on for it too.... less than 2k from my house and on my cycle route home.

However there were some kids who drowned about 20 years ago at that spot.
They had borrowed canoes from salmon leap canoe club.
At the time I recall people saying they had been snagged in weeds.

If you know anyone in the canoe club I would tap them up to find out about submerged obstacles.
Though I do recall seeing bouyed canoe channels.

I for one will be wearing a suit + 2 hats... definitely a non-speedo event.

If anyone does live close by or knows a local canoe club that use the venue then maybe get in touch and ask them about any known issues swimming there. Irrespective of swimming experience and strength safety first eh.

    Thanks for that
A few things in there for concern .. esp. 'The lake is a man made reservoir. Many buildings, trees, walls are just under the surface of the water and can cause capsize'

Sea sickness pills and some of the usual beaches it is for me so.

Let us know if you are heading to any Dublin beaches, cheers. At least I would be more bouyant in the salt water!

    hi, mloc

i spoke with Howard Watkins,Salmon Leap Canoe Club, this morning re swimming in reservoir.

the ESB 'own' it, swimming is strictly not allowed for safety reasons, heavy undercurrents from turbines etc.

i'm also interested in OW swimming locally. i sometimes swim in Lough Key (with Lk Tri Club on Sunday mornings in Summer) or Dun Laoghaire
    (Seapoint??) neither being very convenient!

The IASC in Summerhill have a man made lake (for Wakeboarding), they may be worth contacting otherwise i can't think of anywhere locally that's safe and CLEAN.

    Canal?

No bother, will post in my swim log when planning to head to the sea-side. Bucket, spade and wetsuit mandatory.
Based on some tides and weekend commitments managed about 1500m in Bray early yesterday morning - its still very very cold - but not a bad way to start the day.

Good to see there is quite a bit on interest in this. I will get in touch with the place in summerhill and see, I know they had a tri there last year. Some of the lakes near Blessington might be an option too?

The summerhill spot would be perfect. Its a filled in quarry. Id be on for this too should times suit.
