No great suprise givin the platform sharing partners they have these days but they've confirmed that the next 159 will be rear wheel drive again. Lets hope they dont cock it up. The Jag S-type / XF is proof of how good you can make a rear wheel drive yankee platform .....

They've been saying that for about a decade now. I'll believe it when it's out there :)

Guys apart from the V shaped grill which revolutionised car design in the mid nineties its still an Alfa Romeo and shall be and will remain one of the biggest heaps of SH1T ever built!!!!So keep your knickers on bet you anything rear differentails will be literally falling out of them

Very nice post, did you have a little meditadion before posting this crap ? At the end of the day IT IS ALL DOWN TO TASTE. If you want to buy a BMW then you'll buy a BMW, if you want to buy a ROVER then you buy a ROVER. And to prove you wrong, they're as reliable as any other car make. They're reputation is mainly due to idiots who expect them to be built like tanks and service them once every 5 years. I have one for the last 8 months and all I had to do was top up the screen wash. Heap of ****e, eh? Before posting rubbish on this forum maybe you should start by reading forum rules and respect each and everyone's decisions. It's his car, it's his money, it's his decisions. FACT !

And to be on-topic as well: It's good they're returning to the RWD platform, we've missed them since the Alfa 75 era.

Correct, and V10 Diesel that was talked about...
Guess I'll have to stick with the 159 for now...

    That doesn't prove anything

    From the linked article:

"Both the Giulia and the Spider are expected to be rear-wheel drive cars. This could be based on the Chrysler LX platform, "

It's all media supposition at the moment, no confirmation from Alfa. I'd be surprised if the 159 replacement doesn't use the platform used on the new Giulietta (and not too disappointed - it's been excellently received and I don't like being stuck with RWD during frosty weather).

O for the love of...Jesus...will people quit with the facepalm images. It's a red alert on how to spot an internet geek from a thousand paces...

The fact of the matter is that no other owner will tell if his car is unreliable, and would prefer to pick on alfas. I got into a discussion with a Toyota owner, he didn't tell me about his car problems, instead he chose to pick on alfa's for their reliability. (p.s His car is a 07 Avensis and he's been to the garage 3 times now with some engine problems)

    Let me guess you've owned........zero Alfa's?

Yeah well if the owner is too stupid to look after an alfa then it will break. They need to have certain things looked after in them and they will be fine. My brother has an Avensis and **** loads of stuff has gone wrong in that. Our Merc has had a lot of stuff replaced in it. My Alfa has been trouble free so far and looking through the service history it was fairly trouble free for the previous owners too.

The current generation Passat is probably more unreliable than any Alfa ever built but i dont see people giving out about them to the extent some foolish souls who come one here about Alfas do.

Oh yeah, and my 156 is by far the sharpest handling saloon in that category I have ever driven. I'd rate it as high as similar year BMW 3 series and way above heaps of **** like Audi A4s. You throw it into a corner and it just sticks. No understeer at all. It has extremely sharp handling yet still retains impressive, if slightly choppy ride comfort. Not to mention the wonderful interiors which these days are actually well put together.

So you are basically calling them **** because you believe they are unreliable based on hear say and completely disregarding other factors like handling, design, comfort, ride quality, quality of the engine, etc. Sounds like a really informed and intelligent opinion

*All my cordylines died and even many of my hardy hebes during the coldest winter in Ireland in 100 years. Global warming me hole

An Alfa is like the beautiful girlfriend who you go out with despite knowing she WILL cheat on you. Pretty, engaging, but ultimatly painful. I love the looks, hate the build. Rear wheel drive will make them better, but thats just like if she cheats with strangers, and not your mates.

....not to mention moody, tempermental & likes expensive gifts like timing chains and silver-wishbones.. but worth it... 'casue when she's up to it she'll please you no end..:P

Seriously, I like these 'urban-myth' style Alfa bashing threads.... they make for entertaining reading... as an Alfa (& other marque) owner for year 'n' years I really can't say that they are that bad... but they are honestly improving all the time...

Does anyone remember when the Japanese cars came to Ireland in the '70s?

PS I would personally love to see RWD AR back again.....
