    Hi,

I was just think reading an article on the AAI website. Should there be a qualification standard to meet in order to participate in any National Junior to Seniors level competitions? It would give people targets, well somthing to aim for.

    What do you folks think?

(Sorry I actually ment Junior to Senior level) :S

Should there be a Qualification standard in order to attend a National Competition? 9 votes

I've voted no, without reading the article. From what I saw of national competition last summer (through all the age groups) the only events where you might need to impose standards are at middle distance. Try to impose them in field events and you'd be left with precious few competing :(

If it means that I cannot take part then, no.

    Do you have a link?

The elite wants a qualification standard for National Competitions, which I agree with.

    I also voted no.

I don't have an issue with a reasonable standard for the National Seniors, howeve I would NOT like to see the bar set so high as to be a deterrent. I fear that standards would be set too high.

The National Masters is a different matter. I believe in keeping people active in the sport for as long as possible. Several years ago, Munster set a standard of 4:54 for the Masters 1500m, irrespective of age (???? - duh!) (btw, my fastest 1500 ever was 4:48, and I wasn't a master then). The result was that the Munster Masters 1500m wasn't run for several years.

Qualification standards are fine, providing you still have the competition, but by focussing too much on standards, as per the example above, you can lose sight of what it's all about.

I wouldn't be on for qualifications standards bar the following events:
    • All Masters events - maybe the same standard as World or Olympic A Standard

We generally don't have enough depth for standards.

There goes the planned defence of my national M55 shot title - the entrants will be down from one to none :pac:
