Looking to replace a Sony 28inch WS CRT with either of the following 2 sets,

    Panasonic 37X20 - HD ready Plasma €590
    Sony 37EX401 - Full HD LCD €690

Will be hooked up to UPC digital and upscaling DVD recorder, no reviews up on the usual sites such as AV forums, What H-Fi, Which etc. so just looking for any new owner reviews, opinions.

    Thanks

Plasma every time over LCD. And Panasonic are the best you can get in Plasma, if it's 37" max then thats the best you can go for. If you can squeeze in a 42" you have a much greater range to choose from - i'd recommend the S20 down south. Or you can get the G20 from up North (its not available down south) cracking TV

Thanks Adam, was leaning towards Panasonic myself, as you're a Panny expert do you know if you can play QuickTime video files recorded on a Panasonic camera through the SD slot.

Hope a job comes up soon.

I prefer plasma too, but with one caveat. If there's going to be a lot of daylight reflecting off the screen then you may be better off with LCD. The G/V series Panasonic are supposed to be much better on the reflection front than the entry models.

Alternatively if you're viewing off axis then plasma may be better.

Hmmm, current CRT is in a corner with a large window on the left and french doors on the right, would often have to pull the curtains on one side depending on where the sunlight is.

Was maybe thinking about the 42 Plasma but the 37 inch would recess deeper into the corner.

Would it be better to watch the Plasma dead on or at an angle.

    Cheers

With Plasma it generally doesn't matter about the angle of viewing. A lot of LCD's have poor off axis viewing. You'd need to check out a few reviews to see which ones perform best. By the sound of your set up you may be better off with LCD. I have a five year old panasonic plasma in a west facing bay window and on summer evenings it's unwatchable. As I said the G and V series are supposed to be a lot better, but obviously there is a price differential over the X/S models.

Deal from Richersounds on the G20 Moe mentioned earlier. Check the dimensions and see it will fit your set-up.

I had a Toshiba 37" LCD for two years before I bought a 42" Panasonic Viera Plasma in December. The Tosh was good, but the Panasonic blows it away. Although there's a 46" Full HD Bravia on sale here in Waterford at the minute for €750. Wonderful picture - even on analogue. Sony got it right with this one.

i got a panny G20 tv and im bloody loving it

i got the 46" version for 1250 from the very kind people of Seamus Watters(that's a few months ago)

i had the G10 before that and I wasnt that impressed with the SD which is important for me but when i read reviews about the G20 i knew I had to get it and iv been delighted with it

the SD is such a huge leap from the g10 and im loving the built in sateille receiver, im able to watch all the freeview channels and able to watch BBC HD and ITV HD

the HD picture is awesome, i just can say enough about how good this tv is
