    Hi guys,

My cousin who lives in NJ, USA is convinced it is worth his while buying Ipads retail in the states and sending them to me.

His plan was for me to try and sell them on ebay or in small computer shops.

Now I said I would enquire as to whether this made sense or not which is what I am doing now. My instinct says not really worth while but maybe I get 1 free IPAD as a worst case scenario!:)

He heard on CNN or one of the business channels of mad europeans paying €1-2k for an IPAD.

Now my view is there may be some margin in it but nothing like what he may have seen on the news.

You then have myusaddress type outfits sending them out for you for example.

    Any views appreciated.

At least I can tell him I asked and did a bit of research!:)

    Thanks

Just did a quick eBay search there: http://computers.shop.ebay.ie/Apple-Computers-Components-/4599/i.html?_trkparms=65%253A2%257C66%253A2%257C39%253A1&_nkw=ipad&_catref=1&_dmpt=UK_Computing_Apple_Mac_Accessories&_sop=3&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Some seemed to be priced around the €1,000 mark but I suppose you would have to watch the item and see if it sells.

Personnally I won't be buying one as my iPhone is doing me fine at the moment but I'm not sure if its worth the risk when they might be out here at the end of May.

I suppose if a few boards members show an interest though you could get them for them.

    Thanks mate.
    Thanks Fingel as well.
I'll tell him there may be something in it and if he wants to give it a whirl then try it.

I would have said to him the 32gb is the best option, not sure if one needs the 3g version or not.

    Hard to know.

Not Spaming here just so MODS know.

Just saw a Guy with one in Insomnia Ballsbridge today.

I was disgusted with myself for falling in love at first glance...

But I presume anyone who wanted one enough could source one from the US?!!?

So Now I hate my 6 month old laptop and my Iphone 3GS. this is a depressing week.

The IPAD will be here in a few weeks selling for €499 or less. Who would want to pay 2 or 3 times over the retail price......they may have done so in 2007 but times have changed.

Purchase price, plus shipping, + Duty + VAT € 21% + Clearance charges......Won't be long eating into your margins, and with them out in a few weeks for less than half of your price:confused:

Probably best not to wait for the 3G version, because it uses Micro Sim cards - none of the mobile providers use them here yet, so you'd be paying an extra $130 for no benefit, yet.

There's a guide on how to trim a regular sim into a micro sim.

    EDIT - Here it is.

Why would you be so optimistic???.... Elm if the 16g is going for 499 in the states, experience would suggest it would be at least 650 euros in ireland. The wise ones among us will wait till the 3G version is out then this WIFI only version will drop dramatically.

But then there is always 95% like me who cannot simple wait to get thier hands on this beauty ASAP! Does not make sense I know but such is life:cool:

WHAT!!????? My estimate was 529-549 for the 16GB WiFi. Comparing the Apple US store Vs the Apple IE store , its near enough Dollar to Euro rates. Maybe im missin something but i didnt expect it to cost that much :(

TBH, your "experience" doesn't seem to relate to Apple's normal policy. Their products now are normally slightly under dollar = euro, and they never drop prices "dramatically", even for products that are not selling.

I need to get one for work purposes - but it will be my personal item ( that is: I am a contractor). So I am getting one sent.

To be in compliance with the customs what do I have to do?

So do they hold it? How can I be compliant in advance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,826 ✭✭✭phill106

Youll get a letter from them saying they intercepted your package, and you are liable for vat or whatever to the tune of €xxxxx.
Ring up the number provided, pay over the phone and they then send it back to you.

    found this here http://www.fixmytax.com/102.html#262

6 Customs implications as regards imports via the Internet, what reliefs are available?

Customs duty is payable on goods imported into Ireland (regardless of the medium used) from outside of the European Union. The actual rate of duty involved depends on the nature of the goods and is assessed in accordance with the tables set down in the Customs & Excise Tariff of Ireland. VAT which is levied at whatever rate would apply to the supply of the imported goods in Ireland is also payable. Customs duty is chargeable on the value of the goods often referred to as CIF or the cost of the goods plus insurance and freight. The customs duty payable is included in the value of the goods for VAT purposes. Excise duty, if appropriate, must also be paid in accordance with Part 5 of the Customs & Excise Tariff of Ireland.

Probably best to get it sent with Fedex or UPS, someone who can track it. You can then stay on top of them for customs clearance etc.

be aware that Revenue will also be looking for tax on income that you make from being a retailer on eBay. So between the import tax and your income tax - and the time spend on dealing with both it is hardly worth while.

For what it's worth... I work for a US company so obviously have some colleagues in the States, I got one of the guys there to pick one up for me which worked out as:

€434.94 - iPad, Sales Tax, Shipping, PayPal fees
~€90 - Customs, UPS customs administration fee

So, cost me about €525 altogether. Then another few quid on getting a US iTunes Store account funded with US iTunes Gift Cards.

Worth it? For me, so far, definitely.

No seriously when I say I work on this stuff, I mean I work on this stuff. I have an application ready to go in a similulator for my employer which would have been ready for the UK launch in late April had that happened (subject to testing on the device). We can still sell it in the US, so I NEED AN IPAD.

( What is the point of unhelpful posts?)

Rob & Phil, thanks for the info.

@Pittens, so get your employer to provide one?

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,110 Mod ✭✭✭✭whiterebel

Not so much unhelpful, Pittens, as uninformed. The amount of people crying, whingeing and getting their panties in a bunch when iPhones ( and now iPad) are launched is amazing. Makes more sense when you explain the situation, and we understand that a month makes a huge difference in getting an app to market.

Rob, did you have to call customs or did they call you first?
