    Hi Folks,

Going to Japan for a month for training.

For anyone who has been there, how did ye manage ringing home/occasional text messages etc.

I will be staying about 100km from Tokyo and intend to visit the city on the weekends, is there a travel pass that might save me money on public transport? I've heard of a railpass, but I'm not sure if that would be worthwhile in my situation?

    Thanks,

If you're with Vodafone Japan is included in Vodafone Passport. If you're not I suggest you change. That's a flat rate of 79c for a call received and standard call charges to phone home + 79c. You also need a 3G phone.

The Railpass is no use to you for occasional travel - it's for 7, 14 or 21 days. I'm not sure if there are local options.

Trains are quite expensive although it depends a bit on the popularity of your route. This site will provide you with all the info you need re train times and prices. It's totally accurate and Japanese trains run on time to the second.

    It's a fantastic country - enjoy it!
