I know it was on a previous thread but cant find it.So, My garmin 405 has disappeared and I cant afford to buy another one. :(
Its a few weeks since these ( GPS running watches ) were available n lidl and wonder if anyone got one and after a few weeks of use - how are they fairing out ? I might still be able to pick one up somewhere .

If you're talking about the one with the HRM - I got one.

Either the battery in the HRM is dead, or I am! - as it's not being picked up by the watch.

As far as the other functions go, the only one I've used is the stopwatch.

    No problems with it.

Don't do it! Buy yourself a Garmin 305, if you have to (it's cheaper than the equivalent LIDL jobby). Sure, it's bulky, but it's the same size as the LIDL watch. Garmin have a new lower end watch coming to the market very soon too, and I'd imagine that it will be in the same price bracket as the LIDL watch (and should cause 405 prices to drop too). So probably best to wait around.

Yeah, I'd just wait for the Garmin 110 - which will probably be around 150 euro as you won't have to buy the HRM or anything.

Any more info on this new Garmin thats due to come out?
Will it just be a HRM & stopwatch, or is it likely to include any gps mapping functionality?

Yep, it's very similar to the 405 just that it seems to be a basic version of it - time, distance, route, HRM etc

Same happened mine, I replaced the battery and it works fine.

As RQ pointed out, it's similar to a 405, but is aimed more at the runner who just wants to press [start] and run. No advanced programs, no intervals, no virtual runner, or the other frills that some people might or might not use. the only accessory that can be connected via ANT+ is the (optional) HRM. They suggest that it can indeed by hooked up to a PC afterwards to upload your runs, but their is no mapping 'on-board' if that's what you meant. Also, they don't mention how you're supposed to hook it up to Garmin Connect, as there doesn't seem to be a ANT+ USB stick in the box). Garmin watches tend to be a little buggy (and more expensive) for the initial releases, so you have been warned!

That was some quick replies - thanks folks.

So its essentially just a stopwatch with distance calculation - and as Krusty has mentioned, there may be some teething issues for the early adopters.

As I'm a bit of a techy, I think if I was to extend beyond my current stopwatch + mapmyrun combo, I'd want the extra bells & whistles such as pace alarms, etc.

May just wait on the more expensive options to come down in price a little.

It does include pace information, and you'll get lots more information when you upload your history to Garmin Connect or GTC. Just read the manual (geek-fanboy. What can I say?!). This one takes a USB cable, similar to the 405, but data is transferred via USB rather than 'over the air'. This is a much better arrangement that the 405 of you ask me! The watch is recognised as a mass storage device, and you can just copy or import your runs from the device. It also means the battery will last a lot longer (in standby mode), as it's not searching for a USB ant stick every 30 seconds.

The manual is only around 10 pages long, so definitely the watch for the techno-phobe!

The garmin 110 that is due out in may is on sale for pre-order on ebay for €229.00
I think that would have suited me best initially as I dont use all the extra gizmos on the 405. Definitley wont now that it has disappeared. Fe*k it anyway. I only had it for three months and was starting to get used to it. Dependent on it too .Bah.

I only used the pace/distance/time/clock/heart monito/autolap feature on it. I usually just write my stats in my diary as I dont have the time to admire them on the PC  I find it less hassle to just use the clock for intervals etc. Perhaps I should just stay with the the heart rate monitor and go back to map my run and buy a watch again?

Is it not a bit of indulgence to buy a second one in four months

That is a ferocious price, and you would pick up a 405 for a lot cheaper (I paid €189 for the one I have (without HRM). Don't buy it for €229. That is a waste of money. I think you should stick with a cheapy HRM (LIDL?) and mapmyrun, until the prices come down in the coming months, or you find a 405 for less than €190 (or a 305 for less than €150) or decide to stick with the cheap HRM!

i got the forerunner at the expo in paris without the heart rate monitor for 150 euro.didn,t have to pay vat since i don't reside there.have only used it three times yet but it does what i want and can always pick up a heart monitor at a later stage.

    Krusty,
I use the forerunner 50...the basic model with no GPS.
Its grand, but i would like an upgrade.
Whats the difference between a 205,305 and 405.
Now,dont get to technical on me because it would be wasted,i like what the 50 does, pace, distance.
    I'm not big on gimmicks.
I have a feeling the 205 would do me fine, all i want extra is GPS and to be able to see the pace, distance and (running) time at the same time,on the 50 you cannot see the pace/distance together, you have to push a button.
I like the look of this 110,nice sleek looking sports watch, the 205 looks like a bit bulky.
    What do you think ?
    What would i get a 205/305 for ?

The only difference between a 205 and 305 is that the 305 will take external attachments (peripherals) like a HRM, cadence sensor, foot pod etc.

The difference between the 305 and 405 are mainly:
    • Size (405 is much smaller but you can fit 4 fields on the 305 screen instead of the 405's three fields)
    • Battery life (the 305 will last a lot longer without charging)
    • ANT+ technology (The 405 connects to your laptop wirelessly (not really a big deal)
It sounds like the 110 might be a good fit for you, but you wouldn't be able to set up an advanced program on it, like an interval session.

I'm only guessing Sosa (I don;t go hunting good prices for Garmin watches) but I reckon a reasonable price for a 305 would be 130-150. A reasonable price for a 405 would be 180-200 euro. I reckon the 110 watch will probably sell (eventually) for 140-160 euro.

Thanks,i just had a quick look on ebay and amazon and the prices are a good bit more than you think on there.
Im not buying now anyway, might wait a while to see if the 110 comes down as i like the look of it.

They're cyclical. Wait a month or two, and they'll be back down again. Also look at ebay.com (instead of ebay.co.uk). The 305 is going for €135 (including delivery), the 405 is going for €182 (inc delivery). There is a risk that you'll get stung for vat though (21%). I never have, but it is a risk.

    Ditto SOSA

When I priced the 405's before they all seemed around 300 quid. Must look again to see where the 190 quid ones are?:)

    OOPs crossed post Krusty
