I don't know how many of you have noticed, but we've had a Pirate Party since 2009! I only discovered it the other day :D

When they get 300 people to sign up, the can register as an official party with the Oireachtas. Up to 240 now!

With all the controversy over Eircom and this three-strikes crap in the news, hopefully they can shake things up a bit!

In other words: we don't know anything about economics, so we'll just vaguely refer to something that we think people want to hear.

In Sweden The Pirate Party only concerns itself with issues regarding privacy, copyright and patents. It takes no official stance on economics, the environment or anything else except their focus issues.

Which deems it a wasted vote.

Does no-one see a problem in a party that effectively legitimises copyright theft? I like my internet freebies as much as the next man... But come on... I still know that when I download something for free that its effectively stealing.

The Irish Pirate Party are waiting to gather 300 members before really doin anything. None of those policies are set in stone yet. Once they've reached the membership goal, they'll have a conference to sort that stuff out.

It's not as simple as that. You should read up on their policies.

    lol

You know what? If I could walk into a showroom and make an exact copy of a Ferrari, leaving the original one in place, with practically zero risk of any consequences - I ****ING WOULD!

Its a bit odd alright. I have downloaded everything over the years but a political party for pirates is a bit much. View will get votes just for the fact they say they are pirates, then get some power and act like any other party.

    Agree:
"The Party attests that all information of a non-sensitive nature should be freely and proactively made available to the public at large without application to government body. The Party, in accordance with the goals of the International Pirate movement, abides by the European Convention on Human Rights and asserts that all people should be treated in a fair and just manner in all aspects of life"

"In keeping with the right to privacy afforded in Bunreacht na hÉireann and the European Convention on Human Rights, the Party seeks a complete abolition of public monitoring without proper warrant or consent, including but not limited to retaining internet access logs, emails, telephone calls (including mobile and VoIP communications)."

"Copyright legislation must reflect the doctrine of fair use: non-commercial activity, including private file sharing, being conducted without intent of financial remuneration shall not induce civil or criminal proceedings."

That was a massive speed-read, I'll read their constitution properly. I'm sure there's things I don't agree with, too

Well they're affiliated with the European Green Party, I don't believe they're officially a member of this party (the Swedish Green Party are) but the Pirate Party MEP is listed on the European Green Party website as being affiliated with them.
So while the party may not give an official stance on much else, I believe they're generally assumed to side with the Green Parties on these issues, rather than abstaining.

EDIT: Also the bit about the economy in constitution does look a bit weak, but most of the points not related to privacy/IP/freedom/equality there are a single sentence, usually just a simple "We are leaning towards this side of the argument", I suppose it makes sense since it's not their main goal as a party, but I'm interested in seeing how it compares to more established parties constitutions (although different is not necessarily worse), may have a look tomorrow.

Swerving off topic rather severely.. considering that there's a limited amount of resources on this planet of ours, what day of what year do you propose as the change of societal outlook from the current unending hunt for faster growth and expansion?
