I know porridge is supposed to be THE breakfast if one were trying to lose weight as I am but I have no love at all for the stuff. What cereal alternatives are there out there? I've heard oatabix is good?

How do you feel about eggs? They are a great source of protein and will keep you feeling full for ages:D

I'm not a massive porridge-lover. I generally have eggs, with fried broccolli or some fruit in the morning.

Not a massive porridge fan myself but I get the ultra fine oats from myprotien.co.uk and it means I can just gulp them down in a shake and with some chocolate whey its actually quite nice.

    Or just have eggs.

    Hi There

I don't like porridge (as in a warm gloopy breakfast) either. However Jumbo Oats with some toasted seeds, a couple of nuts, a few berries and maybe a scoop of chocolate whey and a splash of milk, makes a good wholesome, healthy & filling breakfast. This way you get the all the benefits of porridge without the warm, gloopy baby food sensation :D

A mushroom omlette is your only man for breakfast. If you have time, some meat to go with it as well.

Or how about 4 eggs, soft boiled. Then egg removed from shell into a bowl, to which you add some diced mixed pepper, quartered cherry tomatoes and some sliced spring onion.

While the eggs are boiling, you fry a 6 oz fillet steak (rare) in a little olive/coconut oil. Once cooked, place on a warm plate, throw the egg mixture over the top, then tuck in and enjoy.

I have this maybe once a month as a treat, it's delic :D

Sorry dudes, I'm looking for something quick to fix up at 05:30 before dashing for work...think cereal. I'm not looking to bulk up ...just lose the belly. I ain't got the stomach for porridge so something like weetabix/shredded wheat/cornflakes/rice krispies/alpen/country store....what would be the best out of these cereals?

    That steak thing sounds lovely!

But it'd be a lunch or a dinner for me. Might have that on saturday for lunch! Nom nom nom

I find that it only takes me a few minutes to scramble a few eggs in the morning. Don't know if you are going to get any positive advice on eating any of those cereals that you mentioned there. They are all fairly over-processed and full of sugar as far as I can see...

Flahavans Muesli is quite nice, healthy and quick to prepare. It does have oats in it but the raisins and other fruits are the dominant taste. I normally throw a few corn flakes on top for good measure!

This is the one I buy - http://www.flahavans.com/product/readytoeat/hi8.htm

I would also recommend eating a natural yoghurt as well for breakfast (make sure to avoid the ones that are full of sugars) - again, healthy and quick to eat. Glenisk do some good organic ones.

I would be the same as yourself OP - I need to have something that takes little or no time to prepare and eat (i.e you don't need to let it cool down before you eat it like porridge). I don't think i'd be capable of cooking eggs in the morning as i'm still half asleep. The Museli and yoghurt is a solid option though.

I really don't like porridge on its own but if you put a bit of jam in it, or apples, sultanas and almonds, it's really nice!

And I make it with skimmed milk too. Porridge made with water is just disgusting gruel.

Eating eggs in the morning is will not "bulk you up", heavy lifting and serious calorie surplus does that.

Eating eggs in the morning will help you lose the belly faster than eating any cereal.

Try this: Break 4 eggs into a bowl, add a pinch of salt and pepper. Microwave for 30 seconds and then eat. I find that as quick as eating cereal.

I have 6 scrambled eggs most mornings with a nice big lump of butter. Takes 5 minutes. If I'm in a real hurry I do the microwave thing. It does not require alot of effort.

weetabix/shredded wheat/cornflakes/rice krispies/alpen/country store etc are rubbish and are not healthy.

    don't hate me ;)
    I'm still gonna suggest porridge.

At the weekends I chop up some strawberrys and bananas (any fruit really)
Throw on some Glenisk yogurt and top with porridge and maybe some honey/ chopped nuts.

The oats are nice and chewy and not a sludgy mess and it's super quick with nothing to burn sleepy fingers in the morning. :D

Or you could make your own musli with oats, chopped nuts, dried fruit.

    Hi Fingers

As has been said before, most of those packet cereals have lots of hidden sugars and will not help one bit with "losing the belly"

Really all you need is a little organisation.

I am also up at 04:45 each mornig and would be eating breakfast around 05:30 ish.

So what I do is the following,

On a Saturday while shopping I will buy some nuts and a packet of mixed seeds. Then at home I will throw the whole packet of seeds onto a tray and toast them. Once they are done allow them to cool down.

Then I will take 7 sealable sandwhich bags, into which I will measure 40g of Jumbo Oats. To this I will add a dessert spoon of toasted seeds, 3 almonds, 3 hazel nuts, 4 half walnuts, 3 brazil nuts (chopped), a dessert spoon of dried goji berries and sometimes a scoop of whey powder. Seal the bags and leave in the press. Breakfast for the week. Any nuts and seeds left over can be stored in an air tight container for snacking on.

Each morning at 05:30, grab a bag and pour contents into a bowl. Throw a few mixed berries on top and a splash of milk and you are eating breakfast at about 05:33.

Similar deal with lunch. My lunch every day is some sort of salad or maybe a Pitta. So each evening when I am cooking dinner I cook the meat for the next days lunch. I will also chop up the salad vegetables and wash and dry the lettuce leaves. Store everything im air tight containers. then in the moring if I am having a pitta I will fill it with the prepared stuff which takes about five minutes. This means I never have to resort to work canteen or shop bought stuff for lunch.

Everything is possible with a little forward planing.

    Best Regards,

    M

    +1

Two scoops of ground oats and two scoops of protein. I'm not a morning person and its the best way for me to get a breakfast in the mornings.

Love my morning porridge but if I'm in a rush I will put the dried porridge in a blender and mix it with a protein shake.

    Porridge with strawberries = amazingness

Or think of it this way, what do you want less, your belly or some unpleasantness, something for something eh? :)

Or just go with the eggs, I take an omelet with me everyday that I cook the night before, saves time.

Porridge is hateful but still does the job. I make it with milk and throw a little Nutella into it and just get on with it. Since I've started running on top of the exercise I was already doing I've noticed that it really does keep me going for longer which makes the few minutes of horrible eating worth it.

Do you eat it cold or reheat it? I need to get more protein into my diet now and was going to go with eggs. Like the OP with porridge, not a fan but am more than willing to eat things I don't like for the greater good.

If you soak your porridge oats in a bit of apple juice the night before, then add cinemon/raisins etc .. it's delicious!!

Also means you can eat the porridge oats cold, and with a splash of milk too if you prefer ...

I know porridge is supposed to be THE breakfast if one were trying to lose weight as I am but I have no love at all for the stuff. What cereal alternatives are there out there? I've heard oatabix is good?

Porridge IMHO all depends on what is done to it.
Personally I love it, have it with water no milk.
However I do add the following:
    • Honey
    • Bananas
    • Strawberries
    • Blueberries
    • Blackberries
    • Raspberries
    • Dried Figs
    • Dried Apple
    • Dried Apricot
    • Dried Dates
    • Dried Prunes
    • Raisins
    • Touch of sugar

I put the porridge on first usually about 150-160grams with 600mls of water and will add a bit more water later on maybe 50-100mls dependent on how long it took me to prepare the rest of it.

2/3rd's the way through I add in the honey 60g.

The qty above is for 2 people 2/3rds for me.

Honestly tastes great - porridge on it's own is not for me.

However I now only have this twice a week as I am looking for more protein in my diet and the above contains bugger all.

I make up a breakfast shake, a patented breakfast shake but it's awesome! This is made the night before so zero time in the am except pour and drink, what maybe 10 seconds!:)

If the porridge is gloopy the ratios are wrong or it did not cook long enough.

I KNOW we are all in a rush in the am but I have porridge on a low heat (6/7 out of 12) for 10-15 mins before full heat is applied.

I must take a few pics of the consistency this weekend for proof of a thick and creamy porridge with zero milk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,785 ✭✭✭ferike1

I eat the eggs cold. Its fine. I eat two hots meal a day haha, porridge in the mornings and dinner, the rest is tuna from the tin, cold eggs, pot of natural yoghurt, protein shakes etc. I've gotten used to eating many things for the sake of it, , also learned to love many foods i hated when I was a kid. Spinach being one of them

I find the easiest way to make porridge quickly is to pour boiling water on it, stir, leave for about 5 minutes and then put some milk in once the water has seeped up. (I get changed while im waiting, morning efficiency eh!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,573 ✭✭✭Fingers Mcginty

WOW thanks for all the replies folks. I'm going to give the eggs a go. :D
What about some toast with the eggs though...would that be a no no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,800 ✭✭✭The Guvnor

Personally I like toast with eggs but if cals are an issue have just one instead of two.

In fact I cannot remember the last time I had eggs without having toast!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,386 ✭✭✭✭rubadub

There is no need to cook porridge, you can just have the oats & cold milk, it is just museli without the nuts & dried fruit & sugar.

You could make french toast with wholemeal bread. You could also liquidise your oats with milk and egg and make pancakes, they could be made thick and put in the fridge and in the toaster each morning. more info on pancakes here. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=2055002535
