I'm currently on a locked PAYG 3G iPhone, but it's in the process of getting unlocked at the moment. Simply put what happens when I move over there, will my current sim work? What's the story with internet usage? Will roaming charges absolutely cripple me?

Kind of a first timer here so any help would be appreciated :)

the phone would work, but roaming charges for data would be horrific. which network are you on?

Vodafone ireland does a 360 package for the iphone, its 100mb per day for 39cent per day and works in the states.

does that 39c a day apply while roaming as well? if so it's a hell of a deal

If your going for the whole summer you should probably look into getting an American pre pay sim. Roaming will cost you a fortune. Just get your phone unlocked and any sim will work.

As dave said, it's the only job!

I was in Vegas for a week recently, and even without data roaming, just general text's and a couple of calls, it was nearly an extra 60euro on top of my current bill!

    crippling!

Yes I used it in the US a few weeks ago.

I was in New York last November and used up 20 euro over the 7 days on all my calls / texts / data. I was using my phone heavily for maps and stuff like that. I found the roaming data with Vodafone to be very good (I'm not on the 360 package, not even sure it was available then).

But as was said before, getting a local SIM is a good idea.

Another option is MAXroam, although my girlfriend has had a few problems with hers, but Newstalk are always raving about it.
