Sligo Senator Marc Mac Sharry has hit out at what he brands the “endemic culture of secrecy” within the Health Service Executive.

His comments come as the Information Commissioner ordered an interim report on symptomatic breast disease services at University College Hospital Galway be released to the Fianna Fail Senator.

The report was refused by the health service executive following a freedom of information request by the Senator in 2009 before the controversial transfer of breast cancer services from Sligo to Galway.

The Commissioner, Emily O’Reilly annulled the HSE decision and said the withholding of such information could reasonably be expected to undermine public confidence in the health system.

Senator Mac Sharry said although the battle to retain breast cancer services in the North West has been lost, the decision highlights the culture of withholding the flow of information within the HSE.

Good man,Marc, when you get into government this secrecy will end won't it? Oh wait, you are in government and your party has tried to cripple FoI requests by increasing fees.

I'd say we'll see more and more of this over the run-up to the election as FF TDs try to be seen to "do the right thing" (as distinct from actually doing it) in order to save their sorry asses.

This is why FF always win elections. They are all things to all people.
    What do they stand for?

What a surprise, Ray's nephew wants to make a name for himself.

Came across him during my college life and have rarely met a more arrogant individual.

Sleepy: He's actually Ray Macs son, you have to keep it in the family. Rays nephew is a mere Town Councillor in Sligo.

I'd say this is the first bit of jockeying for position in looking for his nomination for FF in Sligo-North Leitrim next time out. The name still carries a lot of weight in Sligo-NL and the hospital is a major issue for a lot of folks up there.

It's one of the reasons why Scanlon and Devins (both FF) have been so vocal about it. Its really just a lot of shouting to see that you're actually doing something, whilst doing nothing at all.

Heard Matty McGrath on the radio yesterday slating the FF gov and then he goes in and votes with them. Noel O'Flynn does the same thing coming up to elections.

At least Cowen et al will say one thing and vote for it no matter how wrong or inept it maybe.

I heard that. You'd swear he wasn't in government the way he goes on. Its like he thinks if he highlights bad decisions made by his government that he is empathsing with the public. This may be a new FF ploy. 'Fianna Fail, we are terrible but at least we know we are terrible'.

This may be a new FF ploy.

No, its not. Its an ancient politicians ploy. One usually used when they can see the whites of the electorates eyes as polling day approaches.

McGrath is in the same constituency as Martin Mansergh, one of them could go at the next GE, 3 seats 2 FF, 1 FG but Manseragh only scraped it last time. Further to this the seat might be taken by Seamus Healy who is from Clonmel, as is McGrath. Healy an independent did very well at the locals in 2009 and has a fairly solid base in the area.

McGrath is watching his back and hoping Mansergh gets left behind.

Its posturing to show people that "I'm on ye're side against those hoors up in the big smoke". Plenty of examples of this around, not just FF. John McGuinness and Jim McDaid are other good examples.

No, the nephew did not run at the last election. Do not know why.
