Jobs at the Social Welfare Office

People always say stuff is ironic. I'm not sure what ironic is anymore but I reckon this is pretty close.

I missed my signing on last week only I didn't know for sure. For the past week I've been calling them to find out if I was supposed to sign on last week but noone picks up the bloody phone there. I actual rang them around 15 times and I never got anyone on the other end.

I went to pick up my dole today and it wasn't there. It was cut off. So I went out to the social welfare office to get it put back on. When I got there i asked about geting the dole back etc. and asked the woman at the front desk if the phone goes through to her. She told me not to blame her (in jest).

So I go to hatch 8 and get the dole put back on and then I say to the woman there:

"I've been trying to call the office since last week to find out when my signing on date was and noone picked up. I rang about 15 times!"

"Oh, well, we're kind of understaffed here so theres no one to pick up the phone."

"I dont mean to be smart, or claim to know what irony is.....but is this not ironic?"

    "No."

Coincidental? Irony? A fecking sham? Why is the ****ing dole office short of staff that only need to answer the phone? Shortage of skilled phone answerers?

If you are unemployed, you only have to remember to do 2 things.

    1. Sign on.
    2. Collect your dole.

That's less difficult than working in an understaffed office & trying to answer telephone calls from people who can't remember to do one of the two things they have to do to get their dole.

Unless you were already getting it your Dole will be put back to €150, now. Same thing happened to my housemate who didn't sign on and couldn't have been arsed sorting it out until exactly a month later.

No - that's why you don't have any dole money.

This is Civil Servants being pricks and completely detached from reality... but hang tight, their kick up the arse is comming soon in a big way... they may eventually find out what it's like to be in the private sector! Yeh, the dudes that pay their wages... peeps who have since lost their jobs, suffered massively in wage cuts etc...

I've missed 5/6 of my sign on dates. Do you know what I did? I went in the day after.
I think you're a bit lazy sitting at home ringing, you should have went in. These things don't sort themselves out

Agreed. A simple phone call could have sorted out whether a journey out to the office was required though. I thought it was an efficient use of my time.

    BUT

If you have a phone - you answer it

Fair enough. Next time land in with a CV and tell them you're a professional phone answerer :D

Sure you've no job, you've got all the time in the world.

Why did it take you a week to walk down to the dole office?

Doing nixers or something eh eh??

No, this is not Civil Servants being pricks. If someone doesn't sign on then they are presumed to have got work of some kind. All people on the dole have to do is remember to come in on pre arranged dates to sign on, once a month. Not too much to ask. Its got nothing to do with detachment from reality in any way.

Aww now in fairness when your on the dole you dont usually get up until past 1pm, then its time to shower and cook a bit of grub and read the newspaper by the time thats finished its nearly time to watch the afternoon show and by that time the dole office is closed.

Well they only accept signing on Tuesday and Wednesday don't they? I figured after Wednesday I'd go down this week and hope that I wasn't late! I really thought this through.

Turns out now that ALL late signings will happen on Mondays.

ANYWAY, this thread was supposed to be about "Jobs at the Social Welfare office"

You forgot to mention that the Civil Service are pricks for refusing to answer the phone

    Musical office, is it? :D

Some caught out dole-fiddlers have been told to whistle for it when they sign on.

I lost my job about 4 months ago, despite that I was brilliant at answering the phone :) My local dole office don't even want me calling in, they just send out a card once a month which I post back and thats it.
