Gordon Brown's motivation for British Army being in Afghanistan

On a a number of occasions I have heard Gordon Brown and other Labour politicians explain that the Biritish Army presence in Afghanistan was to prevent terrorism in UK cities and towns. This of course ignores the fact that many commentators have pointed out that most of the terror attacks are planned and implemented by UK born personnel who receive instructions from Pakistan rarther than Afghanistan.
It also ignores the more pertinent fact that in over thirty years of terrorism in Northern Ireland and despite the massive Police, army and Intelligence presence in Northern Ireland, the UK Government was still unable to prevent the IRA from launching ' Spectacular' bomb attacks in London and cities like Manchester. This opposition political parties do not seem to want to point this out to the Government.
So what is the real motivation for the British Army presence in Afghanistan ?
Is it political, is it to curry favour with the US or, as Tony Blair once partly admitted, is it simply so that the UK may be seen to be punching " above its weight internationally" ?

The Great Game describes past events whereas The New Great Game describes the present.

It's basically about a struggle for control over central asian oil and gas reserves between the SCO and US-UK alliance.

Zbigniew Brzezinski wrote a book called The Grand Chessboard which is almost a blueprint for invasion of Afghanistan, written in 1997!

"It is imperative that no Eurasian challenger emerges capable of dominating Eurasia and thus of also challenging America. The formulation of a comprehensive and integrated Eurasian geostrategy is therefore the purpose of this book"

Obviously, he's referring to Russia/China or more specifically SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation)

It's a pretty big subject which you'd really need to research on your own but you might find it very interesting.

Smaller, poorer countries that nationalize their oil reserves or natural resources have always been attacked in one way or another by the US/UK.

Historical examples of this are Iran in 1953 when Prime Minister Mosaddeq nationalized AIOC (Anglo-Iranian Oil Company) in the interests of the Iranian people.

He was shortly removed by CIA-orchestrated coup "Operation Ajax" and replaced with a dictator to serve US/UK corporate interests.

Venezuela also nationalized their oil reserves which led to CIA-orchestrated coup attempt in 2002.

Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa recently said they will eventually nationalize the country's oil
Don't be surprised if he gets removed from power also...i'm sure he's on the US/UK hitlist.

Honduran president Manuel Zelaya Rosales was kidnapped, beaten and removed from office last year because he wanted the Honduran people to hold an election on the country's constitution, this was also CIA-orchestrated.

Iran has nationalized its oil reserves and stopped using the dollar for transactions..something Iraq happened to do before being invaded, so you can see where it's going.

Pretty much anywhere you see US/UK military bases in the world, there's exploitation of natural resources and people in those areas.

It's the kind of history they would rather you didn't talk about..

The list of countries interfered with by US/UK ...too many to list here.

Libya seems to have escaped lightly from its takeover of the oilfields and even its terrorism !
I thought it a little intersting to look at Brown's motivation for having troops in Afghanistan given its failure to contain terrorism in Northern ireland. How could it succeed with far fewer numbers in Afghanistan ?
