Connecting MacBook to TV - problems

I have a black MacBook which I want to connect to my TV.

I bought a mini DVI to DVI adaptor and then a DVI to HDMI cable which I have hooked to my TV. I have the sound coming from the output jack into the TV via the red and white connecting heads.

Here's the problem - when I connect it all up, all I get is a static picture of my wallpaper, it doesnt even register a mouse movement. Also there is no sound getting through When I switch the TV to HDMI the only sound I get is the sound from the last channel I was watching.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I had it hooked up to my old TV with a VGA connector and it all worked.

    Help!

Ok, for the picture it's easy: your Mac is in extended desktop mode. Scroll the mouse to the extreme left or right of your built-in screen and you should see the pointer. If you just want to "mirror" what's on the Macbook's screen, you need to go to System Preferences => Displays => Arrangement and check the box labeled "Mirror Displays". It should remember the setting next time you connect it.

As for the sound, it's a bit trickier - the output from the Macbook is image only - since there is no HDMI output, the HDMI cable you have hooked up does not carry sound. You can connect a cable from the headphone out of the Mac to two co-axial inputs on the TV but the TV needs to have these inputs alongside an HDMI output. E.g my HDTV has 4 HDMI inputs but only the 1st has the audio inputs to accommodate a PC. Or you could just use external speakers (which is how I have my system set up).
