Does anybody know what are the guidelines (informal, best practise, legal, insurance) for having First Aid/ambulance services at a sporting/athletic meeting?
Our local Community Games is shortly holding our sports day and Im wandering what the guidelines are.
I preusme that its based on numbers, but thats just my guess.
    Anybody know?
I have to get back to our committee and advise them!
    thanks guys!

In Cork, the generally accepted practice is to have an ambulance at any sort of event, irrespective of numbers.

A couple of years ago, a guy collapsed in a low key local race and was given CPR on the spot. Luckily a defibrillator was available nearby and a trained CPR person was spectating. The runner made a full recovery. Unfortunately, Gerry Mullane of West Limerick died in a road race that same week, R.I.P.

Cost of ambulance? - anywhere between €150 and €400 for the event - hint: haggle.

Yes it's dear (for a small event), but if you need it, it's priceless!!

As a result of the incident mentioned above, many Cork clubs invested in debibrillators and training and at least one life (a 14 year old!), that I am aware of, has been saved as a direct result of actions taken following that incident.

    thanks Condo thats great feedback.
Who are the main ambulance service providers for this type of event, is it the Order of Malta? I think theres another one? I presume most ambulances would have their own defibrillator?

Red Cross & Order of Malta are the usuals. You should specify the defib, as they are often not supplied with all crews, but imho, they are a vital element.
