Oh Adrian Brody... where did it all go wrong?

I think it looks quite good actually. It's directed by Vincenzo Natali, who previously did Cube and Cypher, so I'm looking forward to it.

The noises it makes running and squealing are the least scary noises any creature has ever made in film.

It actually reminded me of this guy

I've watched both of those quite recently before I came across this. I was disappointed that it's not out yet as I wanted to watch it. Dunno about the trailer actually showing the creature though.

It's a very good film actually, not a patch on Natali's other work (of which Nothing is perhaps my favourite) but it's head and shoulders above other recent examples in the genre. The trailer gives far too much away for it's own good which is par on course for most recent releases.

I've been looking forward to this for ages. It feels like a very long time since I first saw footage of it which made me think it had just disappeared or been delayed. Normally with delayed releases it is a bad sign but apparently not for this. It played incredibly well at Sundance this year. It was picked up and penciled in for a summer release, which says something.

Yeah, I loved Cube and Cypher too... and Adrian Brody is an excellent actor, so I can't imagine it would be all that terrible...

Can see it being riddled with clichés at the same time, but once it's entertaining, I don't mind!!!:D

Was Guillermo del Toro involved in this film?

Yes, he was an executive producer.

Watched the (newer?) longer trailer in the cinema the other day. Showed elements of the film (ie: focused on the realtionship between teh creature and it's two creators a lot more) that look interesting. So much so that my expectations have been raised significantly since my OP.
I've also been told that it gets down right odd in the final act. I've decided not to read into that too much as nt to spoil any potential surprises.

It is a great film and one of those rare gems which suffers years of set backs and release date changes only to arrive and not so much live up to expectation but blows it out of the water.

It is pretty good with a few scenes that are quite iconic visually.

Plus I am quite partial to staring at Sarah Polley :)

One of the most messed up film experiences I've ever had, seriously, no taboo is left unturned:
Child abuse, child negligence, incest, inter-specie genetic engineering, inter-specie intercourse and inter-specie rape just to name the big hitters.

****ed up, really ****ed up, but it gets a lot of points for pure fearlessness and originality. It's a good film in spite of the mental scarring I've been left with. :pac:

Been looking forward to this for a while. Something very unsettling about the premise as it's not outside the realms of possibility anymore. I mean look at this!!!

Wasn't this done back in 1986 with The Fly?

Okay, this was truly f*cking horrible. I didn't catch any trailers prior to watching this but saw it was from the guy that did Cube and said I'd wander in. His and Hers lost out, so without having seen that I know I made a massive mistake.

You want to see some of the worst acting? Watch this. Want to hear some horrendous dialogue? Watch this. Everything else will have to be covered up from here...
I just can't believe how Brody managed to pick this one. Surely when he read the script he would have noticed the bit where he'd have to have sex with this creature that they've brought up? I think that's him pretty much finished. That sort of sh*t ruins a persons career and rightfully so. So you have this erotic sex scene where Dren/Natalie Portman seduces Brody etc...so when Dren decides at the most appropriate opportunity to turn into a male, he proceeds to rape the Elsa or whatever her name was. A massive F*UCK OFF to the director right there. Seriously, how can people put up with this sh*t.

Had to laugh at the inclusion of the word tedious in the film...probably the director taking the piss out of his own movie right there. And I was under the impression that this was a sci-fi/horror thing...I laughed at too many moments but the movie didn't even mean to be funny.

Anyway, just in and wanted to quickly type down some stuff.

It's more so Frankenstein's monster than anything else with a slight hint of Species.

Who'd have thunk a chick with backwards knees* could look so damn hot?

*Technically they are ankles, but they look like knees.

You won't think she's hot after she
    turns into a male.

    Not bad.
The bit where Brody is caught having sex with the creature then runs out after Elsa pulling up his pants was just too funny though.

Thought the acting was fairly good.(except for the boss guy with the beard).

    k.
But you only read these sorts of threads after you've seen the film.
Or at least you should imo.

Keep your opinions to yourself! I didn't read the Inception thread after spoilers were allowed in and that was indicated in the title. I always read these threads to see what everyone thinks of the film, especially if I think I might enjoy it. Spoiler tags are there for a reason, use them.

This went on release in Ireland on the 23rd. It is listed in Dublin cinemas but it does not appear to be listed at all in any Cork cinemas now or next week (Reel Picture Cinemas; Omniplex), unless I am missing something. Anybody know the story with this?

It could be on limited release - this means that there's maybe one print for the whole country, so it is passed between cinemas.

Very positive reviews all over the place but I thought it was terrible. Ridiculous characters behaving like idiots, predictable outcome and overall boring.

I'm really not sure it wasn't meant to be kind of funny.
It certainly got plenty of laughs in Liffey Valley.

Surprised to see Adrien Brody in it though, would have thought it would be strictly E listers.

Is it just me or does anyone else think Dren looks like Sinead O'Connor?

Watched this earlier today. An odd film: half good, half bad, always ugly.

The good: The makeup was fantastic, and the creature design top rate. Nice to see an effective 'monster' (sorry, a bit harsh on Dren) in cinema. The cheeseball science works - an over the top take on genetic engineering, but fun on occasion. The messed up bits are amusingly weird:
the sex scenes, Dren sprouting wings, the shareholders conference.
Messed up without ever really losing track how silly the whole thing is. Sarah Polley is great: needs more film roles (and director roles too)!

The bad: The middle act just drags and drags. As soon as
Dren becomes humanoid and began 'growing up', I lost interest for around 45 minutes. Just too absurd to engage, without being silly enough. The dance scene was fun, but that's about it.
    It annoyed me how much
throwaway dialogue which later becomes pivotal plot development signpost' moments there were. That's a mouthful, but basically those moments where something was said off the cuff that you knew was going to be important later. Like "an anonymous donor" or "oestrogen levels are down". It just meant you were waiting for these things to happen:
I was constantly a few steps ahead of the film, waiting for the inevitable to occur.

The ugly: The cinema messed up the aspect ratio for the first twenty minutes of the film. Watching in a weird compressed format. Boo!

All in all: Great creatures, sometimes fun plot, pleasantly ridiculous on occasion. Also: way too slow in the middle, a bit too clearly signposted, stupid cinema.
