Going to the US for a year and want to bring my savings 3000-5000euro.

How best to get it over i can open up a bank account when i get there

    Some of the options are:

CHange here to cash and carry over (no way!!)

    Simple bank transfer

Load my credit card with 3-5k and withdraw at an atm over there

Use Xe.com to convert it and do an electronic funds transfer to my US account

Any ideas which is the most cost effective

Credit card is good for short term, you could leave it here and get there and open your account then transfer electronically but i think its a bit expensive sending it out of the country plus the exchange rate fee etc.

I dont understand whats the big deal about carrying €5k in 50s or 100s, at least this option will only cost you the exchange fee when you get there.

the exchange rate or buy rate physically in the bank is horrendous plus the commision charge etc.

its probably the most expensive way to change currencies and thats not factoring in the "cost" or risk(however small) in holding that sum.

Why not just change it into 100 Euro notes and bring it over in your bag?

Could you give to a friend/relative and ask them to lodge it into your US bank account once you have opened an account there?

Also. Travellers cheques? Would they be worth investigating maybe? (Just an idea mind, I haven't used them "le píosa mór fada" (a long, long time).
