Should there be a ban on spoiler threads?

Its coming towards the end of our favouite show and I have been glued since the beginning. I'm not the biggest fan on here by any stretch but I know that the majority on here would hate to know the ending.

I log on tonight and see 2 threads about spoilers ( one which mentions names etc). I like reading all the posts but i'm afraid if there are so many spoilers out there people might start talking about them in say the episode recap threads.

Would it be possible to stop people talking about them or even maybe have a sub forum where people could only use them.

What do the mods think? Not sure if i can resist the temptation for the next 6 weeks.

You'd think people would realise at this stage that most fans don't want spoilers yet there are still people who can't wait to post up spoilers here, and don't even bother using the spoiler thread.

IMO spoilers should not be allowed at all from now on. There's plenty of other websites and forums to go to if people want to discuss spoilers.

Yeah i'd like that. I'm weak now and desperate for each weeks episode that i'm putting my eyes into the spoiler threads. A nicely quarantined lost forum here in boards would be best as i don't want to know things before they happen.

its a simply as this if u don't want to read spoilers then don't. there's enuff ways of getting banned round here anyway, no need to add spoilers to the list

True, easier said than done. But even if the amount of information in the title was kept to a minimum it would be a help.

Both of which had the word "Spoiler" in the title. No excuse.
If you're too weak to avoid reading them, I can ban you until May 24th? :);)

Oh and the title of the thread was NOT a spoiler..... there was no context.
    I've renamed it anyway....

In fairness, one had character names in it. Just naming some of the characters mentioned with the word SPOILER beside it is a pretty big spoiler. I know that I won't be as surprised now if/when they show up.

The guy has a point. Not about banning spoilers...that's a bit extreme...but at least about common courtesy from other posters when posting new threads.

No worries guys.... if you see something you think is spoilerish, report the post and one of us will jump on it as quick as we can.

And if a thread says "Spoiler" (and you don't want to be spoiled), then don't read it. :)

Sorry didn't mean banning the people, just to stop the use of spoiler threads.

If people want to discuss spoilers they should be able to. There's no point having a whole forum for the show if you can't discuss everything about it. But they should be kept out of the episode threads and have proper warning in the thread title. But I think the majority of people know this now.

However, a lot of the time there's little point in posting spoilers in here as they rarely provoke any discussion. This is the reason I stopped posting the promos - no one was talking, but people who would otherwise have avoided them were watching (- they were crap anyway and revealed too much).

Certain things (such as the 10 minute preview of 6x01 and the season 3 finale twist) get a lot of discussion, but most of the time people in here have little to say about spoilers. Anyone who is interested in them is probably subscribed to DarkUFO anyway and doesn't need to read about them here.

I love spoilers, but there are good and bad ones. The good ones get you excited about an upcoming episode; the bad ones just ruin it for you.

I can understand what the OP has said. It's not a lot to ask. For some of us the temptation is to much. There should at least be a kick in the arse for anyone who posts a spoiler in an episode thread. I try as hard as I can but I'm just like Dougal in the episode of Fr. Ted where he was told not to press the red button.

If you're not able to resist the temptation of spoilers its nobody elses fault to be fair. I agree they shouldnt be allowed in the episode threads but other than that if its a thread about spoilers marking it as spoilers in the title should suffice, same with spoilers tags in other threads

I posted a spoiler (didn't know it was one till I got banned)the week before the finale of season 5...Got a month ban.It sucked because it meant I'd miss all the chat over the finale......that was a kick in the arse.......so the arse kickings DO get handed out.

(Basquille let me in though once I said sorry so it worked out......learned pretty quick what spoilers are though!)

I was waiting for someone to say if you cant resist it's your own fault. Didn't think it would be so quick. Spoilers should not be in episode threads. Thats all I want/think. Spoiler threads should not read with the headline of Ben's Death - Spoilers within. Thats all!

I totally agree with you on the thread titles and stuff because thats not really giving someone the choice the way tagging it does

I think that perhaps there should be an announcement just for this forum to remind people that spoilers must be properly hidden seeing as how we're in the final few weeks, and also to warn people that spoilers may accidently be posted, so to be careful. Perhaps even add the link to the thread here for the 'Staying Spoiler-Free Support Group' thing I saw here.

Just an idea seeing as how we're in the last few weeks. But I agree that spoilers shouldn't be banned as some people may still want to discuss them. I check DarkUFO's site too, I'm just no longer going to check anything about the finale

if the title has a warning for spoilers then its a good warning. up to the reader to have the will power not to click :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,053 ✭✭✭jimbling

Why don't you just have one spoiler thread/sticky?

All spoilers and discussions of spoilers go into that thread. It would lesson the clutter and would mean that there is only one thread to avoid (for us poor weaklings who dont have will power).

Also, you wont be tempted by the new thread with a big SPOILER on it. It will just be a new post in the old thread that you never go into.

Nobody needs to get banned, if a new thread does get created by someone who doesn't realise, then it can get moved by the mods as soon as they find out about it.

    Problem Solved.
    /Thread :D

    \thread (re-opens thread)

What's the point of one big spoiler thread? Besides, there are varying degrees of spoilers. Like I said, I have no problem looking at spoilers so long as it isn't about the finale. One big spoiler thread could ruin that. Not to mention that if 3 new spoilers were posted in one day, the thread would become a clusterf*ck with 3 different spoilers being discussed in the same thread, and possibly on-going discussions from previous spoilers. It would be horrific I reckon.

People who don't mind spoilers just need to be respectful and more careful to ensure not to spoil people unintentionally. People who don't want to be spoiled just need self-restraint and willpower.

    Thread can remain open

but how do you know what a spoiler is about until you go in and read it?

meh, okay...thought it would be an easy way to solve the problem. But guess I was only looking at it from the point of view of avoiding them ;)
I pretty much stay out of majority of threads except the episode ones these days anyway.

If I'm not certain that there'll be no finale spoilers, I don't look at the thread.

    *hint hint* :D

If people want to post spoilers they can, but in separate threads clearly marked with SPOILER. I've never once been tempted to read a spoiler cos I hate the things and personally feel they ruin enjoyment for watching the show. That's just me though. Other people may want to read spoilers so whats the problem? As has been said, it's not their fault your too weak not to look. I'm not :p

But I agree that character names should not be put in the thread title for spoilers. eg when the upcoming episode was The Package, there shouldn't be thread titles like
"SPOILER about Desmond!!", who has been gone for some time so makes it obvious the spoiler is that he's coming back
That's a bad example because most of us could see it coming anyway but you get my point!!
