Shin Splints

Went for a 6 mile run this morning and after maybe half a mile i got quiet a sharp pain in my lower right shin. It more or less stayed with me for the duration of the run, although i didn't feel any pain when running up hills.
By the end of the run it didn't seem too bad but for the rest of today it has been quiet sore. I'm hoping that this isn't the onset of shin splints, but if it is has anyone here ever suffered them before and if so what kind of recovery period do they require? Not looking for medical advise just a general idea of what problems people have had with these types of injuries.
I plan on resting for the next few days and seeing a physio later in the week. Thanks in advance.
