Dilemma

I was told about a month ago that basically my whole department was being made redundant, we are contingent or contracted works at a large multinational company...basically as contracted workers we are easier and cheaper to dispense with than fully badged company employees. Anyway I have been here just over two and a half years and qualify for redundancy which although not a lot, certainly helps.

Anyway some members of the team have already gone, I am due to leave at the end of July. So after receiving the news a month ago and talking with the HR lads who provided me with a paper and estimate of redundancy figure I decided I'd travel for a few months in August. I booked my tickets and accommodation and paid for visas.

Anyway I got a call the other day from my work supervisor(she is based in America, we communicate by phone/mail-she doesn't have a lot of interaction with my employers/contracters here) and she said she was looking into moving our positions into another department where they may have the budget to cover my salary. But I have already banked on and spent the redundancy cash and was lining up work elsewhere for when I returned. What should I do?

I think it's out of order if they withdraw redundancy now as it has been a month since they said I was being made redundant and there has been not an inkling of something being lined up for me here, I've watched other people leave and now out of the blue I get this call from my work supervisor (whom I also feel bad for, she's working hard to secure my position and I am ready to leave as this company treats its contingent workforce disgracefully)

    suggestions/advice please

Had they given you a date for termination yet?

Have you explained the situation to them?

They probably assume (like most people would) that you would have preferred to have kept the job, and were working in your best interests..

Ah come on OP they are trying to work in your best interest to try keep you on. You should be thanking them instead of giving out about them.

Fair enough if you had already pegged the money for travelling but should you not be happy you still have a job.

Are you just annoyed as you were getting exited about travelling. If so cant blame the job they are trying to hold onto you.

    Hi Op

I have to agree with the others that you have been lucky that your boss is trying to save your job, I think this is a case of cutting your losses and thanking your lucky stars you are still in a job.

    Hiya

I have just been made redundant and in a similar position as yourself.
3 days before my "last day" i was offered a job in another dept with a pay cut and a lower position, i said yes never signed a contract but then 2 days into it i changed my mind told them i would rather take my redundancy i called up employment rights before i told them and they said that i had 4 weeks to change my mind as i never signed a new contract and there was different terms in new position.I got my redendancy package.

Did you get a letter to say your job was at risk?
Is the new dept your going to same job and money?

Call Employment Rights and see what they say 1890 808090 they are very helpful.

I know how you feel it's a very confusing time when you plan what to do next then someone throws a spanner in the works!

Hope it all goes well for you

    DG
