I'm not a big fan of using anti virus/malware programs, they are generally a pint in the ass flashing up all the time wanting attention etc. I'm generally very careful with my browsing and downloading etc and over the years I've had very few problems.

Right now I have an infection which flashed up my IE window with a rotation of many websites with ads on them etc. I've tried but cannot get rid of it. I've installed AdAware and also MalwareBytes but still it's there.

I need some recommendations as to what to install to get rid of this and maybe what I should get to keep perminantly on my computer?
    Thanks

Download "Spybot Search & Destroy". Update it to the latest definitions. Reboot your computer into safemode and run Spybot. Remove what it finds. Try rebooting normally. If this hasn't fixed your issue, you should try to just rebuild your PC from the install disks. It takes a few hours, but if you haven't got rid of this with AdAware, MalwareBytes or Spybot this is probably going to be quicker than any of the alternatives.

Re. protection, install "Avast Anti Virus". It is light weight, keeps itself updated constantly, never bugs you (just tells you when your virus definitions have been updated, but you can turn off this notification if you like). And best of all - it's free for home use.
