iPhone Spam App

Was getting a horrendous amount of spam on my phone. Tried a few free apps but most were useless at catching it. Found 'Spamdrain' and tried the free trial and found it quite effective. Trial is now over but it costs €30 to buy the app :(. Anyone recommend a free alternative that is as effective and simple to use?

Can you clarify what you mean by spam? Is it to your email inbox??

Sorry, yes, to my e-mail account.

You're far better off getting your email filtered for spam by your email provider rather than relying on an app or software to do it. If I may ask, who is your email provider, perhaps you can avail of a spam filtering service from them?

    +1

Your mail provider should be able to filter MOST of the spam for you without having to fork out money for an app from the app store?

I have an old 'esatclear' address. It's fine on my laptops, just comes through on my phone

That's a bit unfortunate as esatclear accounts are now controlled by BT and BT don't do spam filtering (at least they didn't the last time I checked).
The reason you aren't getting spam on your laptop and are on the iPhone is that most likely you have decent spam filtering software on your laptop but the phone is accessing your email account directly and downloading the spam as well as the legit mail.
You could have your email passed though a gmail account before it reaches your phone. I've set this up a few times. These instructions are a bit long winded but they do work and it's free! :)

Basically you create a gmail account and once created, you go to settings/accounts and click Add POP3 email account. Enter your esatclear details here but make sure you select the option to leave messages on the server. If you don't select this, your email won't go to your laptop.

Once you have your esatclear details added, again in settings/accounts, under the heading Send mail as, you'll see an edit info link. Click that and then click Specify a different "reply-to" address. Put your esatclear email address in here.

Lastly, you click on the Forwarding and POP/IMAP heading in Gmail settings. Click Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on. Beneath that, click on the configuration instructions link and set up your iPhone according to the instructions.

With this done, gmail will check your esatclear address for mail, filter out the spam and you'll get the spamless email on your phone for free! :)

:D Perfect, worked a treat! two more questions, can you change the size of the font? It's a bit harder to read than the other e-mail :o Also, can I disable the other app from receiving mail?

Sorry, one more thing! When I send an email it shows as coming from my gmail account and not my esatclear one. The reply address is correct  Doesn't really matter I suppose as it will still come through to my phone anyway. Just wondering if I can change this?

Great stuff, glad it worked out.

I don't know of any way to change the size of the font, I would think that it's conrolled from within Gmail but I can't see any setting that would affect it, unfortunately. By 'the other app' I assume you mean your other email account? If so, it's just a case of going to settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendars/Mail Account Name and flicking the On/Off button under the Account heading to Off.

Unfortunately not, it's a drawback of using this system. People will see your replies as coming from Gmail but when they reply to that, it send it to your esatclear address (which is why you filled in your esatclear address in the reply-to field of Gmail in one of the steps). It's not an absolute perfect system but it works very well and it's free.

One other thing to watch out for - sometimes Gmail can be a bit heavy handed with it's spam filtering so it might be no harm to log into Gmail every couple of days and have a look in the spam filter to make sure nothing legit was caught by mistake.

One more thing! Some of my friends are saying that when they try to send me an e-mail they're getting the message that my in-box is full? Is this because I'm not checking through Outlook Express anymore and it's building up? I always empty the spam on Gmail every day. Should I run the two programes?

On Gmail there's an option to delete email from the other mailbox when it's retrieved by Gmail. Set this option and then you never need to log into your east account again.

Is this the option "Leave a copy of the retrieved message on the server"? It's currently ticked. Should I untick it?

Yep, unticking that means that Gmail will remove the messages from the esat account after downloading them.

You may need to run Outlook express on your original machine one more time just to clear the backlog though.

Oops, spoke too soon :( Got this message "Server denied POP3 access for the given username and password." How do I get around this?
