I have recently started cyling again (purely for commuting).

I've started going out for spins at the weekend and I'm doing about 50 miles at the moment fairly handy - this is without any training or practice etc. 50 miles is taking me three hours - which I know is pretty slow - however, I am happy enough because I dont need to stop at all and I can do this after only about a month cycling. Also I'm on my own - I think I could push on a bit if I had someone with me.

Anyway, I've seen various posts here about 100km cycles here and there. How hard are these ? Are they very hilly ?? Could I do one just for the sake of taking part or is it really just for competitive types ? At the moment my 50 mile cycle takes in two climbs of howth - from the golf club side - which is the easy side!! other than that, the cycle is very flat.

I'm not on a road bike by the way - its basically a road bike but with flat bars.

    Grateful for any comments:)

As hard as you want to make them - depends solely on how hard you push it. If you can do 50 miles (80km) in 3 hours with no break, you'll be faster than quite a few of the cyclists who do them.
    Are they very hilly ??
Not generally for the mid-length (~100km) ones. Some are more so than others, but few major climbs on any of these. WW100 is about the hilliest one.

Of course you could - you are precisely the type of person that these events are trying to attract with their shorter and mid range distances
I'm not on a road bike by the way - its basically a road bike but with flat bars.
Drop bars are a big advantage on long spins in a large group - I'll let someone more knowledgable than me expound on this though.
I think I could push on a bit if I had someone with me
You have no idea - for the same effort you go at least 5kph faster on the flat. A good idea is to try to get a little bit of experience in a group before hand - join a boards cycle for example...

Be aware that many clubs won't let you ride in a group with flat bars. Too much risk of bar entanglements apparently.

It was a great spin alright but to be honest that might have been a baptism of fire for the OP in my opinion.... not doubting his capabilities of course

Id like to do 100k during the summer, a race would be nice but wondering if lycra is compulsory or is a tshirt and shorts ok?

You can wear what you like.

You are right jw but that one climb was ''Slieve Maan'' and then there would have been the slow draggy legburner out of Woodenbridge .... but yes 70k probably would have been good tester for the OP and certainly great training for Wicklow 200
