    Hi all,
I'm due to get a present for my wife shortly. She does a fair bit of running and asked me to get her some kind of a Garmin device for measuring distances shes ran etc.
Can anyone recommend something that would do the trick and also advise where one could pick one up at a decent price?
    Any help appreciated.

I have the Garmin Forerunner 305 which i picked up off Amazon for e135 think they around 150 now. There is a few other versions but i find this one to be top notch

Yeah, I think she means either the Garmin Forerunner 305 or 405. The 305 is the older version, and is quite chunky, the 405 is newer, slimmer, and costs a fair bit more. There's not a whole lot of difference in the features.

Yeah she'll probs be looking for a Garmin forerunner 305 or 405. The 405 is the latest version. Some like it but others prefer the older 305.

If you search garmin followed by the version, you'll find lots of threads on the merits of either watch

If she wants to be ahead of the curve garmin have a new range of lite gps watches out called 110 or something. They seem to be styled more for the female market. Usual early adopter caveats apply though. If it was my OH, I'd go 405 over 305 because it's neater. The best places to buy them chop and change but i know people who got good deals on eBay shops in Israel and the US.

hey digme, there are a couple of options out there - any gps watch will do that for you, a lower cost alternative is a pedometer type watch or finally an iphone can do the same.

The pedometer is not going to be as accurate though - it measures how many steps you take, and if you change the length of your stride (as usually happens when you speed up and slow down) the distance will be off.
are there iPhone apps that use GPS or are they all just pedometers?

yeah iMapmyrun and Runkeeper use GPS - i find Runkeeper to be excellent. Tracks all my runs and gives my splits and more.... speed, distance and elevation that was run shown on the map
