If a student needed a solicitor, is it all paid for by the student or can they apply for free legal aid?

They can apply for legal aid.
If it's a criminal matter, you need to be at risk of imprisonment to be eligible.

If the student was the injured party and cannot really afford a private solicitor, what options would they then have?

Is it a criminal or civil case?

You don't need a solicitor in that context. If charges are made then the case will be between the state and the accused.

If the student was the injured party, then you shouldn't need a private solicitor as the matter will be prosecuted by the Gardai and they will help.

If its criminal, the State will prosecute the case. If you feel you have a personal injuries claim you can apply for legal aid at the legal aid board. This service is not free, it is means tested and you would have to pay a contribution.
