    Very good card, definitely going..

Stupid matchup. Thiam is old and sucks.

Lee needs to start getting into the mix of things instead of fighting old has-beens. A fight like this is ok when warming up your career - but not at this stage.

When is Lee gonna' do something of note?

Thee fights are just hyped mismatches and are not up to it.
Though, I won't be surprised to see Lee make hard work
of this old blown up LM.....

C'mon Andy, do a Carl Daniels on this dude. Show me something.

Well considering he just beat the guy who gave the current european champ all he could handle and he is not the finished article (ie people may view him as a handy defence) fighting this guy may be a good option and given the domestic match ups and fighters on the card I think this is a good main event. Never seen this thiam lad but form looking at his record he either knocks you out, or gets knocked out trying. Roll on May 15th!!

Well he wanted Barker for the European title but couldn't get him, what else could he do? We know its a hyped mismatch but its all he can get at the moment, and its better than nothing.

Thiam can still punch, however he no longer has the ability to land that punch.
his power **** is the left hook aswell, not the right hand(although he can punch a bit with that) which is good news for Andy as it's straight/overhand rights he has real trouble avoiding.

Lee will be able to control him at range with his jab and thudding lefts.
Thiam will struggle to get inside and with his size, he has no chance fighting on the outside. Lee should get to him by the midway point.
This really is a marking time fight though, they wanted Gevor and couldn't get him.
They really want a European title fight vs Barker, but he can't get that now so has to do something else in the mean time.

A ko win will suffice, and with the cracking undercard this still is really a fantastic card overall. If Lee struggles with Thiam I'll be very, very worried.

Very disappointed. Although not surprised given such short notice. Lee needs a new promoter, someone who can actually get him a fight he needs to progress. His team have been rubbish so far, if you intend on actually going places and not fighting bums your whole career, you need to step it up after 21 fights. The fact they had so long to sort out a fight too shows his promotional team to be incompetent and very unprofessional. I hope for the sake of his career that this carry on does not go on much longer.

Having said that I'm still looking forward to it though. Will it be televised? Undercard is incredibly tasty so I'll give props to Peters for that.

It'll surely be televised by RTÉ as a Pro Box Live.
While I wish a better opponent could be found for this fight, if they can get a fight with Barker for the European title in the near future I'll have no problems with Lee's mangement team or Brian Peters. He did lose to Brian Vera(okay 2 years ago now), and they've been trying to work the kinks out of him since. So it's made sense not to match him too tough.

What I don't want to see is a longer lay-off however, it's been 6 months since his last fight and he's got a worse opponent than last time. That is something which we simply can't accept after Thiam.

i thought lee is more or less guaranteed barker after this so this is jus a filler fight to warm him up for the european title

    Very, very much not true.
Andy Lee is 10th in the current European rankings and although Jamie Moore will be exiting them due to his retirement, Lee is still miles off the mandatory position.

Khoren Gevor is mandatory anyway and that's a position he won't be giving up without a World title shot. Any chance of Lee getting Barker is reliant on Brian Peters coughing up a lot of cash and Mick Hennessey accepting.
Thankfully Mick is a bit crazy when it comes to taking fights and he'll probably have no problem coming to Ireland with Barker. But that would only be as a voluntary challenger, and only if Barker is getting a good payday.

Barker will have time for one European title defence most likely before he'll have to meet Khoren Gevor. It is likely this will be Gregorz Proksa, and it is Lee's team's job to try and change Mick's mind and get Lee in there instead.
If not it could be very likely Lee won't be fighting for the European title till next year...........and against Khoren Gevor.

This is how it is going to happen lee vs gevor 2011 for the EBU strap.

There had been talk of a May 15th date for ages, I don't know why they delayed the official announcement and then said the opponent would have to take the fight at short notice.

I'm not at all surprised at the choice of opponent, he has a good record against bums which brings up his knockout ratio and makes the fight sellable (in Brian Peters' mind anyway).

I probably will go because the undercard is one of the best I've seen in a long time, but I wouldn't go to this solely to see Lee's fight.

Same as that, it's a great undercard and I think it's great to have fights like this organised. Fair enough, it's not a great match but he needs to keep going and here's hoping it will be a great KO win for him.

They delayed the announcement because they couldn't get the opponent they wanted(Khoren Gevor). Thiam is indeed coming in on short notice, it wasn't like they had him in mind all along but didn't announce him because they felt the public wouldn't accept him unless at 'short notice'. The case was they couldn't get who they wanted, and struggled to find an opponent after that. After a lot of time was wasted they've ended up with Thiam, who's not a great opponent but there's nothing that can be done about that now.

Thiam is a good choice of opponent. Not the best match up exactly but we should see a crowd pleasing fight where Lee learns a thing or two. If he makes mistakes or does things he shouldnt be doing then he will be in for a hard nights work, if he is patient and works to a plan then he should do a job on Thiam fairly early. Its also a chane for him to get a stoppage and look good doing it. I think the reason everyone warmed to Bernard Dunne is because he usually looked impressive, Lee could do with some of the same to raise his profile with the Irish public.

Some were glad to see bernard knocked out by kiko martinez, not me because i love bernard like everyone supposedly does.

I remember rte / brian peters qouting 500,00 viewers for a dunne bill. This was before Cordoba.

Out of a population of 5 million ? i bet duddy when he fights here and lee do the same numbers no doubt.

I'd heavily bet they don't and I'd have to say you've a bias against Dunne if you believe Duddy or Andy(at this current point in time) are as popular as Dunne was. Bernard might have had a lot more detractors than anyone else, but he also had more fans.

It was the fight with Pickering which drew half a million viewers(which is massive viewership in this country) and the fight with Santillian which was shown past midnight did around 400,000.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but don't Champions League games involving English teams(which are hugely popular in this country) draw between 350,000-450,000 a game ?

Here is the vid. 607000 for dunne and lee and duddy pulled 350,000 a piece.

I wonder how popular the idea of the cuban lads taking on some of the top irish guys would be in a couple of years time?

My only problem is when Lee lost against Vera he claimed his mind wasn't on the fight, if it had been, he would have easily disposed of the guy.

Now you can't attribute forum talk to Lee's state of mind going into this, but with the talk of Macklin, Duddy, or Barker match-ups coming down the line and God knows whatever else if he can find a US promoter, I just hope he keeps his mind on the job at hand.

Such excuses won't really wash more than once

This card is falling apart like a cheap Chinese motorcycle :(

Was really looking forward to seeing her back in action again, she is currently Ireland's greatest sports person by a long shot.

Yeah, I put up two (fairly ****e) pics on here back a page or two, you can actually see the back of the blondie one I was talking about. I don't live too far away from where it was held, met Andy, the Cubans, and Jimmy Magee aswell. Brian Peters was there too.

I asked Andy when he's gonna KO Barker and become Euro champ :D He said that was the plan!
