UPC RIP OFF

Recently cancelled MANUTV from UPC well outside original contract period and they charged me €15.00 to cancel it. When I questioned this (unknown) charge they abruptly insisted they had informed customers "in the papers" on some obscure date. I've checked all their press releases for 2008-2010. No mention!. They also insist it's €15.00 per package! to cancel!
I think this is a disgrace, whatever about cancelling while still within a contract package, but outside this period is simply a rip-off!!

AFAIK its a well publicised €15 downgrade fee with UPC.

I agree that I am aware of this downgrade fee. however, as a sticking point to what you agreed with when signed up to the service. Did you sign a contract. If so, what does it say? If you didn't but agreed to T's and C's over the phone, DEMAND the call recording as proof.

Failing that, I'd reject the charge.

Agree with both posters. It used to be €10 downgrade charge but has been increased to €15. I guess its to discourage people from subscribing to higher packs & then downgrading the following month, which happened to us.

Ironically there is no charge if you cancel your account. UPC are a joke in this regard.

for God's sake, don't be giving them ideas. This charge caused a lot of anxiety on this site when it was introduced 2/3 years ago. Do a search to follow the debate. I seem to recall a poster who had signed up to a package, before the fee was introduced and avoided it. It would depend on when tou signed up for MUTV.

Anything but - in fact the original wording used is if you cancel within the 12 month contract period.

UPC have very dubious practises - I have had an issue with them making an illegal direct debit.

The only way to deal with them is to threaten them with legal action - they quickly back off as they know they dont have a leg to stand on.

Its unfortunate that our consumers association who are there to protect us appear to have given up the ghost with UPC.

As an aside I have a signed letter from there sales and marketing director telling me for €5 a month I can get HD.....no where does it mention the installation costs

It's by far legal to charge anyone cancelling their subscription outside the 12 month contract period, so no worries here...

Got the HD in january and was never charged any installation cost,in fact have never been charged any costs, outside the monthly rental cost.

I've had the MUTV for a couple of years (certainly outside the contract period) I only got rid because it was somebody else in the house that wanted it and they moved out. I have sports, t.v. broadband etc from them at the moment but I assure you I wo n't have them for long. P.S. they're definitely the worst customer service I've ever endured!! (anybody thinking of swithing to UPC beware!!)

I only got MUTV because somebody in the house wanted it but they've moved on and that's the only reason I downgraded. I had it longer than the contract period. I also have t.v. sports broadbank etc from UPC at the moment but not for long! they're also the worst for customer service by a long way ( anybody considering swithing to them beware!!)

Wll have to say though, like you,I always thought that as long as you see out the contract for the package you were on,there was no charge to change it,up or down.
Well we learn something new about UPC everyday, more bad then good:(
