Parking fine

Guys, I'm looking for a some advice. I parked in a pay and display area today and was fined €60. I bought a ticket for two hours but I got held up for a few hours so I couldn't make it back to my car to insert the the new parking ticket.

What is the best way out of the fine, should I say I had the two tickets in the car and the newer one fell onto the floor of the car so the warden mustn't have seen it, or should I be honest and explain what actually happened.

Just pay the fine. You said it yourself, you were in the wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,155 ✭✭✭✭Berty

    You overstayed your parking.

Suck it up buddy and pay the fine.

Anyway, if its two hours you cannot stay for more. You cannot even just get another ticket. You must move your car elsewhere.

I got one about two years ago. Forgot all about it and get a letter a few weeks later to say it had increased to €90. Also forgot about it and haven't heard anything since :p

afik pay and display has a max time so if you say you had 2 tickets you would be overstaying the max time and be entitled to a fine.

What if they ask you to bring the 2 tickets.....;)

If i am parking and i dont know how long i will be I look for a pay on leaving carpark/

If you didn't buy a second ticket you prove that you had one, unless you could say you threw it away on the street without thinking.

Pay the fine and lesson learnt.

Guys, I actually have two tickets which covers the time I was parked. Its just one wasn't on display.

even if it fell on the floor (which we know it didn't) it's called 'pay and display' it would be your fault you didn't display.

suck it up and pay the fine.

I was in the hospital and I am recovering from a broken foot so I couldn't run down to my car so I went to the nearest pay and display machine.

doesn't matter, you didn't display it now you must pay the fine. What's to stop me from getting a fine and then asking someone who had parked in the car park for their old ticket to show that I had purchased a second one? (well with the exception of my car being in my girlfriends driveway in Ireland and me being in Korea not driving a car)

Wardens take pictures of your car to prove you didn't have a ticket on display for the time you were there. Your fine is not only for being there without a ticket, it's for being there without proof that you had purchased a ticket.

You will just have to pay the fine, or hope to god you find someone to believe you, I know I wouldn't but I'm a príck ;)

Your ticket wasn't on display, and you were fined. There is no way out.

Just pay the fine and learn the lesson.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 373 ✭✭ocokev

Next time you are getting your foot examined, do the same trick, except this time hide on the warden.
When the warden goes to put a ticket on your car run over and start yelling and shouting abuse at him/her.
Maybe then they might look to see if people have dropped their tickets on the floor of the car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

The fine isn't for "not having a ticket", it's for not displaying it.
Even if you had one and it fell on the floor the fine is still valid.
The warden can only go on what he/she sees trough the windscreen.

Right so you went to hospital to get your formerly broken (now recovering) foot checked out and parked and got your two hour pay and display ticket.

But you got delayed and so instead of going back to the car with the new ticket you just went to the nearest machine to the hospital and got a new ticket and put it in your pocket because you cant run on your recovering foot. That right?

I dont think you have much of a case even if thats true.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,760 ✭✭✭Theta

Friend of mine was clamped even though she had a valid ticket in the car it had just turned upside down when she closed the door of the car.

The ticket was not on display technically so she had to pay!

I disagree. I think it is very possible that a judge would accept this. If he can produce proof that he paid for parking before his time ran out but just couldn't get back to his car as he was in hospital. You could try writing to the corporation explaining this either.

Lets say it was something else. Lets say you got a fine for not displaying your car tax but you could prove that you had purchased it before the month was up and that the new disk hadn't arrived yet (Due to a postal strike or something, or tax office go-slow). There is no way you wouldn't get off that fine.

    Pay and Display parking

Pay and Display parking operates with a single solar powered meter serving about 20 spaces. There will be signs in pay and display parking areas giving details of the hours the scheme operates and the maximum parking time. As coins are inserted, the parking expiry time for the amount inserted is displayed. When you have deposited enough coins, you press the green button and a two-part ticket is printed. The larger part should be stuck to your windscreen and you can keep the counterfoil as a reminder of when your parking expires. Prices range per hour, depending on where you are in Ireland but in general, fees range from 80 cent-1 euro for 40 minutes.
Since 15 January, 2003 Dublin City Council have piloted a new online service, allowing citizens pay for parking using their mobile telephone or credit card to pay certain parking meters in the city. (This online service will initially be available in the zone from Stephens Green to Parnell Square, including Merrion Square, Fitzwilliam Street and Capel Street. Parking meters which facilitate online payment service are identified by a Blue button, located on the front of the machine). Read more about Dublin City Council's pilot online parking service here.

If you have proof of ticket, this should be accepted, nothing else should be included or relevant,

Yes, Tin. Broken bones usually tend to heal. Have you considered a career in medicine? If you ever break your foot you'll realise how immobile a person becomes.

Guys, what's so hard to understand. I broke my foot, I find it hard to walk at the moment. I had an appointment in the hospital this morning and couldn't get parking nearby so I ended up parking 500m from the hospital. I was in and out in 60minutes for my last three appointments. This morning, I paid for two hours parking thinking that would be more than enough time.

After two hours lapsed I didn't have the time or ability to make it back to my car quick enough so I went to the nearest machine to the hospital and bought a ticket and hobbled back to the hospital thinking I would be finished in a less than 20minutes. I was wrong.

I asked a simple question on how I would best approach the situation as the only thing I did wrong was not display the second ticket.

Yes and the one wrong thing you done is the reason you got a parking ticket, pay it and move on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 88 ✭✭umpsfar

if he had a ticket that spans the same time he was given a parking fine for not having a ticket, the ticket was then given in error.
the only advise i can give the guy is to show the ticket and fine to someone like a traffic warden or garda or such,. and let them give him advise.
but not to start saying crap like it fell of the floor,

How do you propose producing this 2nd non existant ticket as proof?

EDIT. Just saw the explanation. Either way , no ticket on display means you get fined. It's called pay and display

How do you figure? If thats the case only one person in the car park needs to buy a ticket, anyone fined or clamped could just use that one persons ticket as "proof".

It has to be clearly displayed in the window and says so on the ticket and/or signs.

Write to the council and explain the situation and include a copy of both tickets.

Paying for the ticket only gets you halfway , you need to display it too or you just wasted your money. Otherwise it would be "pay and stick the ticket in your pocket"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,499 ✭✭✭✭Alun

It's the displaying of a ticket with a valid start time and duration that makes it valid, having it in your pocket means nothing. Turning up days later with any old ticket that could easily have been bought by anyone else, and possibly already used by them for parking, does not constitute proof of any kind.

I got a parking ticket last year for €80 and didn't bother paying it as I was only in the space for two or three minutes. Got a letter a couple of weeks later saying it was increased to €120. Again, didn't pay and that was well over a year ago. Haven't heard anything from them since. Yeah, I was in the wrong, but who cares? I basically saved €120.

My point is that the OP shouldn't worry about it. He's in a position where he has a fine that will cost him X amount of money. At the end of the day, if he ignores it, chances are nothing will ever happen over it.
