Is the graphics card in the N110 just not able to handle 720 HD files?

Running on XP and while I can hear the audio fine in a number of mkv's I've downloaded, the picture just freezes at whichever point in the file I click into. The video seems to resolve to an image so I'm guessing it's not the decoder... anything that can be done without resorting to a soldering iron or do I just need to be fussier about which versions of files I download?

Noticing that some Youtube files are very jerky as well, even when I'm on a decent net connection.

The graphics card on the N110 doesnt do anything in relation to video decoding/acceleration. Its all done by the CPU. And the Atom should handle 720p Xvid no bother. Xvid is MPEG-4 ASP, which is not very taxing on a processor.

Most MKVs use H264 high-profile. That is very taxing, and more so at higher resolutions and bitrates. An Atom netbook should manage some but not others, it depends on the encoding settins that were used. Generally you're at or close to the limit of what your CPU can do, so results will be mixed.

The best bet you'll have is to use the CoreAVC codec. Its the most efficient H264 decoder around. Most people use it with KMPlayer.

You'll also want to just generally optimise your netbook, again, because you're so close to the limit of what it can do, you don't want tonnes of crap running in the background etc. So clean the system up, keep an eye on background processes, upgrade the ram, etc.

There exists a mini-PCIE video accelerator made by Broadcom (Crystal HD), its only about 20 quid and accelerates H264 a treat. However, im not sure if the N110 has a spare slot. Something to look into.
