Starting Strenght weight gain question

    Hi,

I've been dong SS for about 13 weeks and have put on a stone, which is awesome as basically my main goal is weight gain (which I've never been able to do before).

Thing is in the last 4 weeks I haven't put on a pound, even though I've been horsing into the protein shakes and I've had strength gains, as in my squats and deadlifts have both moved up about 10kg.

I'm wondering what I can do, I'm thinking of taking a week off and going for it again, I'm wondering if there are any better suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Paul

    Hi Paul,

Simple suggestion is just to eat more. For serious weight gain, you've got to be uncomfortably full most of the time. Are you taking in a gallon of milk a day?

Unfort there's no way I could stomach a gallon of milk a day. Thing is though that I don't think I'm doing anything different now than when I was putting on weight, if anything I'm eating more, the gains just seem to have leveled off.

Body fat levels could be on the way down?

Also a diet that lets you go from 75Kg to 80Kg wont take you to 85Kg.

How many cals a day are you getting in?

Sorry, not that it wont but you have a bigger body to maintain so more cals will be required to move up in weight.

take 2 weeks off but keep eating the same amount, I always see my biggest gains during my weeks off for some reason

You were eating enough to make a skinny guy bigger.
Now you need to eat enough to make an average guy bigger. Waaay more than the first case.

GOMAD gives you 2400 calories extra a day. Try a pint of milk every few hours, its easier to take that way.

It doesnt have to be a gallon. Two litres is what I drink a day. I know its all about GOMAD: gallon of milk a day but the 1200 cals and 66g of protein from 2litres isnt bad at all.

    Have you tried?
    Have you an intolerance problem?

Its a bit rough at the start but if you space it out, you will find it gets easier after a few days.

Hmm interesting, milk really does make me feel like **** though and I've a suspicion that I could be allergic to either lactose or casein cause I can drink whey shakes just fine.

@raptorman not sure on cal intake haven't been monitoring it hugely rigorously, but again I take the point that the same diet that takes you from 70 to 75 won't take you from 75 to 80 and my diet is basically the same now as it was when I was a stone lighter.

Think I'll try and take a week off anyway (as shamblertine said) and come back with a majorly increased protein and calorie intake and see where I'm at in 4 to 5 weeks time!

I wouldn't stop training if your lifts are going up. Are you increasing your squat, deadlift and bench every week still? Are you doing much cardio? Are you eating enough carbs and fats?

Workout how many calories you're eating now and add 500.

www.fitday.com is great for cal counting.

Another option for calories I find really handy is the ground oats from www.myprotein.co.uk

I never feel like a big breakfast at 7 in the morn so I have two scoops of whey and two scoops of oats in a shaker for a handy start to my cals for the day.

As above, why stop if yer lifts are on the up?

Squats and deadlifts still moving up nicely, bench a bit slower but making some gains alright.

Cardio has been in the form of soccer matches but the season is over now so I'm down to one night a week on the astro.

I honestly haven't been monitoring my carb and fats intake that rigorously but by the sounds of it I need to start documenting all off this.

I googled the GOMAD thing and it looks interesting, I know milk has never entirely agreed with me but I might give it a shot for a month and see what the **** happens, if I feel like absolute ****e I can try to power through it, whats the worst that can happen its hardely going to kill me!

I wouldn't stop lifting then, there's plenty of time to do nothing when your lifts plateau. I've been squatting 2-3 times a week since the start of January and there's no way in the world I'm resting until my lifts plateau.

See how it goes, if you can't handle all the milk you it might be time for working out cals and macronutrients and all that stuff I never do.

Agree with this. End of last year when I was after mass gain I put on 5kg in a 4 weeks but then it started to stall out. I had to just get nasty with it then and increase the calories more. 2xDouble Quarter Pounders with cheese ftw. I did this and I put on another 5kg in the next 4 weeks.

Milk is the easiest way to gain weight so give it a try and see how you get on.

Ok folks, I've been nailing 4 litres of milk a day for the last few days. Gotta say it's not anywhere near as bad as I was expecting and I feel stuffed almost all the time. It'll be interesting to see where I'm at in a couple of weeks!

    Here here!

A pint with every meal is the way to go. Used to chug a litre on its own but...

    ..no too much.

I have just stumbled upon this site and i really find most comments here helpful and interesting. Heres my situation. Im skinny, short with natural abs and because of this i have been taking magnum 8000 mass builder for almost 6 months! ..i do not go 2 d gym , i rarely do rigorous exercises as i was in full time college at the time and , i must say there were a little improvement in my shape as i was having a very little increase in muscle mass. The only problem i faced was that i was gassing alot after taking the supplement which was the chocolate flavour, also after taking the supplements and doing small exercises like press up, dum bell lifting, my muscle mass would expand immediately but either reduce to a small proportion after the day or just stay the same . I was frustrated and i decided to do more rigorous exercises (home one) , still no long term increase in mass gain.

Now these supplements are finished, i have no money to get another one and my muscle mass have drastically reduced, to the extent that im always putting on longsleeves and always dreading the advent of summer because it would look silly 2 be wearing jackets when it is clearly sunny!
    Now my question is this.
    1) does supplements like magnum 8000 have long term effects as pointed out by many people on this site? or what other things can i do to increase my muscle mass faster without taking supplements as i found out that doing weight lifting actually gets u tired if you do not have any energy supplements, and what exercises can i do to improve my leg muscles? Im really skinny everywhere and this is no health condition but just a hereditory thing that runs in my family!
2)Also i found out via my doctor that the reason why i go to toilet more faster than another person is that i have a fast metabolism. Does anyone know if this is a good or bad thing? because after consuming a specific food in 1 hour it digests almost immediately and i will have to go to the toilet the next half hour! .. this i found out was maybe one of the reasons why i dont get much body mass.. i am 23 i fell too small and skinny that people sometimes tink i am 15 before they even ask me! i would really like a change and improvemnt in my condition.
Any one with clues or ideas on these questions? and what i can do?
    please email me on goddirect737@yahoo.co.uk
all responses will be appreciated . Thank you! :)

You need to lift weights mate. Try starting strength and eat like a horse and drink 3/4 litres of milk a day and you'll put on weight.
