After 5 years of having 2 sky boxes not connected to the phoneline (and moving house in the middle of that) - I get a letter from them saying the box is not connected. Annoying that - now need to work out how to get phone line to tv rooms!!

Strange that Sky are suddenly policing it again! Anybody else get letters?

Never had a letter and never had the multiroom box connected. Am on VOIP now so won't be connecting it if they send any letters.

Yeh I have just got one today stating that an extra €48.50 will be on my bill each month for multiroom as the box is not connected to a phone line ( don't have a land line to the house anymore ), so the bill at the end of this month will now be €112 .

Have had to ring and try and explain about not having a phone line anymore but the multiroom box has to be connected to a phone line and they where not for moving or negotiating on the matter.

In the end I have had to give a months notice and cancel sky altogether after 10 years as a digital customer as well as the 2 or 3 years on analogue.

They really should have built in wireless proximity detectors into their boxes by now. The landline is dying/dead.

or they should use the network connection in the box to allow the box to be connected to the internet to be verified. For a company that calls itself progressive (Sky+, HD and now 3D) they are very slow to move with the times when it comes to this phoneline issue.

I have cancelled my Multiroom through not having a phoneline to plug it into, and the letters they recently sent, shame, but will save myself 15 a month. Cancelled a couple of other packages that I never watched too, so actually sky are getting 20 odd a month less off me. Actually considering binning Sky Sports, and If I do, it will be bye bye Sky altogether.

Umm, how hard would it be to connect 2,3,4 - 12 houses (boxes) together with MULITROOM (;) and make it look like they are all in the same house. Very easy, that is why Sky demand the phone line connected and the caller ID activated on your line. It's the only way (that they use) to verify that the reduced priced full package is actually located in your house and not in your mates down the road and the 2 of you are splitting the cost of 2 full packages. If they enabled the ethernet port then the possibilty of VPN connections back to one house would increase the multiroom exploit exponetially. BTW, I have got letters in the past, I have a feeling this is all connected to the new anti C/S measures they are bringing in next month.

While I see your point, tbh I doubt your average sky user would even know where to begin with doing something like that!

With landlines on the decrease and internet and wireless usage ever increasing, it does seem very stupid on Sky's part not to do something to use it.

Would have thought using the mains wiring would be the sensible solution

excuse my ignorance...but what are the "anti C/S measures" that they are bringing in....
    the Skyman

anti c/s = anti card sharing or you could argue anti customer service in sky's case :)

I'd be interested to know this too but I guess it isn't a big surprise.

Let's be honest here, it's FAR too easy to exploit the Multiroom setup as it is and any kind of Internet, Ethernet, Wireless idea would burst it wide open and don't say that the 'average' person wouldn't be able to exploit VPN because all they'd have to do is look at the hundreds of tutorials that would pop up on the internet.

I also doubt in the extreme that this crackdown on Multiroom is in the least way related to anti c/s measures, that just makes no sense as they are completely unrelated.

How are they unrelated? Without breaking any charter rules, card sharing renders the need for paying for multiroom completely useless. Sky are implementing anti card sharing procedures, next month if rumours are true (low latency reponses) and this will require anyone using this method to have to pay for it again. Sky are simply re-enforcing their old rules before a big uptake again.

Must agree, without going into detail c/s and multiroom are definitely a related topic.

Yes, THEY are a related topic but enforcement of Multiroom phone line connection with genuine Sky equipment AND c/s counter measures to prevent misuse using non-genuine equipment ARE unrelated.

I think you'll find Sky's high priority is knocking out c/s on WAN.

And that's all I'm saying on the subject.

Wow great debating skills there chief. I'm afraid you are wrong though as my friend says multiroom enforcement and c/s are related and thats all i'm saying on the subject purely beacuse it may infringe on the forum rules. I'm open to correction though if it turns out you work for sky's card security section.
