New SAAB 9-5 - headlights

    I was interested to read about the new Hella smartbeam headlights, which are available as an option on the new 9-5:

    People responding to the attached thread seem to think it's just another expensive thing that will break, but the concept strikes me as an interesting one: different beams for different driving environments.

    Is this something that is already available on other hi-spec cars or is it a new thing? I know about lights adapting to cornering etc, but i was thinking more about the increased lighting towards the pavement etc in pedestrian areas.

    my lecturer said not too long ago (as in a few weeks), that in the auto industry now the electronics were more expensive than the mechanics.

    not hard to see why
