It looks quite ugly, to be honest. Hopefully, a discarded prototype.

    Just bet me to it....

I call prototype ( hopefully) ... Looks bulky with no sexy curves ( oh how I love my sexy curves) 80 gb aswell ? What's that all about ?

It looks alot bulkier than the 3gs and very square. I like the round edges on my phone. Hopefully that's not the final product.

I like it. Although it does look more "maculine" as a handset

The fact that it doesn't boot leads me to think prototype, but the style looks like they're trying to take on HTC and Motorola with a phone that appears to have more substance.

I don't think the style is apple though. The little round metal buttons for volume scream prototyping - they look like something a hardware engineer would come up with before a product design guru got their hands on it.

I have to agree with him.

Apple were raving on about their smooth curved exterior for the iPhone.

And then they introduce this gawdy looking square phone.

I'd be very suprised if this is the 4G.

That Andy guy in the link is wrong though, the original iPhone prototype was smuggled out a few years ago, and did end up on eBay briefly.

You can’t ignore the possibility that the phone is genuine, but from the future – left behind in a bar by some errant time-traveler who had a bit too much to drink. Perhaps there only synthehol in his future, and he wanted to experience the real thing…but wasn’t able to handle it…

WOO HOO! This means time travel will someday be invented after all!

    God I love the internet...

That looks like a cheap Chinese ripoff, and I'd suggest that's what it is.

One of the comments I read elsewhere makes a good point..

Apple releasing an iPhone with a removable battery? FAKE!

    :D

Everyone keeps saying this, but there is a European directive that's either been granted, or about to be granted which makes removeable batteries mandatory.

I think there is a bit of debate about what 'removeable' means though. i.e the current iphones batteries are removable, it's just tricky.

This could be a prototype case that allows testing of different batteries for all we know. It looks to be a prototype for the HD but who knows how far along it is.

I'd prefer they keep the current design and just do the spec changes/better camera etc.

Not real, not a prototype, not a chance, just fake. Apple would never design such a device. It would be a huge backward step from the current iPhone.

I can't see them changing the current form factor by much - if at all.

Yea after a second look I agree , it looks like the bastard child of a 3gs and a Sony Ericsson.

I really like it. That would be an awesome phone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,534 ✭✭✭Dman001

At first I thought it was a Chinese Knockoff (and was embarrassed that Engadget would publish such a story, Id expect it off Gizmodo but not Engadget).

But the fact that it has "XXGB" engraved into the back of it makes it appear to be a prototype.

But I dont believe Apple would make such an ugly Prototype (even hte First Gen Prototypes looked nicer than that). And the fact it says 80GB of memory screams of a Chinese Knockoff, where the software is "hacked" to read 80GB of memory but in reality there is only 2/4/8GB of memory.

That one is also a render it was out when rumours of the 3G were flying about.

Its a fake..a guy on macrumors found a Spanish site that claim one of it's users has this phone, and that he bought it in Japan.

Thank Fook for that ! Ugly looking damned thing.

one thing for sure in one of those links someone mentioned that apple should create a unibody iphone ala their macbooks.

as if i didn't want the new iPhone enough already the alu-casing would make me do nasty things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 928 ✭✭✭bertie4evr

    Huh.

Could be possible he just bought the knockoff but its a long shot.

was just about to come here to post this.

i'm not sure about it tbh. i think it looks ok, not a fan of the volume buttons.

but then again i didn't like the look of the iPad, but then i held one in my hands and that was the end of the doubt.

They posted a follow up article about a half hour ago, appearantly it is the real deal:

If it is the iPhone 4G, that won't be the final casing. Looks cheap as hell and the total opposite of everything Apple are about nowadays. It's probably just prototype casing to house the new hardware features.

Hmmmm interesting alright. I think Engadget know more than they are letting on (to keep clear of Apple lawyers?).

They must of known people would of thought that the original 4G iPhone picture was a knockoff, yet made a big deal out of it. And now are trying rather hard that it is the real deal.

On the second picture(the one where there is 6/7 photos of different angles) the bottom right has a weird logo on the back and not the Apple logo... AFAIK there is 2 prototypes and thats a Japanese one but still the same.

    REAL http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/18/iphone-4g-proof/

There is already a thread about this.

Thanks.. I'm somewhat weary though. They're the top gadget blog. No other gadget blog gets as many hits as they do - Not only that, but they are risking their whole reputation on this post.

They're definitely not making this up for the sake of traffic. They are very convinced that it's real and if it's not real, they will be laughed at for weeks ;)

    edit - thanks bertie

Generally when Engadget say that this is something they're sure of, it happens.

  • Subscribers Posts: 16,614 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

are people even reading the thread? thats the 3rd time the link has been posted lads.

It looked real to me to begin with, but it still may not be the new phone, it could be just a prototype case. Still, these things start to leak out the closer we get to an official launch, it's just good to know it's coming and reasonably soon too..

yeh anytime i saw a link on the thread i was like sweet more new info... then it just posts to the same link that was posted literally one post ago.

Apple are known to use prototype cases when testing out new phones out in the wild.

what worries me thought and i've only thought about this since i've seen these pics is that apple will most definitely go for micro sims in this new iphone, i'm fearful that the irish operators will be slow to bring these in would be nice if we got the 3G iPad released here before this phone gets announced to see which operators bring in micro sim but i'd say the release of the 3G iPad is a long way off

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

The more I think about it, the more the new body makes sense. They've gotten accolades with the unibody aluminium macbooks, so why not a unibody aluminium iPhone?

my god that thing is fugly praying its not the 4.0

Vodafone UK were putting together price plans last week for the iPad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,174 ✭✭✭✭Captain Chaos

I hope that's not it either. I reminds me of the Zune.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,384 ✭✭✭Eire Go Brach

I think it looks Great. Nice and solid. I think the iPhone now looks cheap and the plastic is awful. If you ever had an iPod touch or even the older iPods you should know what I mean as the metallic back looks great.

On another note. Does anybody hate the crappy txt on the back. Why cant they just put a simple logo on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

Because you have to show conformity of the hardware to specifications/serial numbers/etc, and there's no battery hatch for it all to hide under on the current form factor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,384 ✭✭✭Eire Go Brach

It looks great. But with eu law it has to be usb charging from this year. It could be an adaptor of sorts.

there is no law, it was voluntary and apple didnt sign up
