Replacing my Dell Inspiron screen myself

Right so the screen o nmy Dell Inspiron 6400 is caput after dropping the laptop. The screen does show the display but it's really really dim, I tried opening up the lid and making sure all the conections to the screen were secure but it didn't help, so I figure I'll need to buy a new screen.

Providing I make sure to buy a compatile screen, it shouldn't be too hard to replace myself, right?

If you are not in panic that's shouldn't be any problem to fix it by yourself. ;)

It is pretty easy to replace a screen on these laptops and there are a load of site on the web that show you how to do with pictures included. Just Google 'replace dell inspiron laptop screen'

I would say it;s the screen inverter that's gone. So you dont even need a new screen. And i have that laptop. Its straight forward enough to take apart. There's dell service manuals online that will take you through the steps.

I have to agree with Alanstrainor, if the image is clear and the only problem is that the display is dim, the cause of your problem is more than likely the DC inverter. I would highly recommend replacing this before the screen, it's easier to fit, cheaper and more likely to fix your problem.

    Hope this helps.

The screen was kinda damaged even before this happened - I think I spilt something on it ages ago and I had a few greyish lines running across the screen. Never bad enough to warrant buying a new screen but annoying nonetheless. Would this also be due to the inverter? How much would it cost to fix just the inverter?

Just a thought, before you buy any parts try removing and reseating the cable from the inverter to the back of the lcd panel. If this cable comes lose it can result in a dim display too (Checking this will also mean you may have to remove the lcd panel and will be valuable experience if you do decide to replace the screen).

If that doesn't work try replacing the inverter. Have a look on google for prices (approx €30-€70 or cheaper on ebay) That should resolve your dim display problem. If it does, see if your happy with the screen as it is. If yes, woot, if not, your only option is to replace the lcd panel.

    Hope this helps.
