I see there are various builds etc about, whats the best and most recent build for offloading the work to the GPU for 1080p mkv playback please? and whats the best codec pack? Also my HTPC has an old XFI Fatal1ty in it, do I need to do anything to offload the sound processing to it?

I use MPC Home cinema :- http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/. Has it's own built in codec's that play just about anything you throw at it.

Personally I avoid codec packs. That said HDpack 2.3 is worth a google you can select the elements to install.
