Bad smell

    Hello there!

Long time reader, first time poster.

I'm coming here to ask for help. For months my girlfriend has been on my case because drinking protein shakes (about one day, sometimes more but rarely) gives me a bad smell. As in, I'm oozing like I'm rotten inside ("of meat and farts" as she says). So this is becoming embarassing and even though I've tried some things (probiotic yoghurt, digestive enzymes), it doesn't seem to go away. Worst part is I can't smell it obviously...

The different protein powders I've tried are ON Gold Whey Vanilla and EAS Myopro Whey Vanilla. I used EAS Chocolate in the past, before I went out with her, so I can't say if it had the same effect, but I just can't drink it anymore, just the idea of it makes me sick.

I was thinking it could be lactose intolerance but I drink plenty of milk and I eat cheese and it's perfectly fine.

So here I am, I'm not sure what's next to try. Eventually I'll stop taking anything if I don't find a solution but I figured I'd ask around first.

dont mix protein shake with milk

That's a detail I forgot to mention, I only mix it with water. about a scoop with 250-300ml. I also leave it to rest for about 10 minutes before I drink it, to avoid drinking (too much) gas.

Don’t mean to be bad…but maybe it’s not the protein? First time I’ve heard this anyway.
You’ve made me paranoid about taking it though!

Well it does go away when I stop taking it apparently. I was thinking it could be ketosis seeing as I eat properly (high protein, low carb) most of the time (bar the occasional burger) and I've lost a lot of weight in the past few months, but again, it stops when I don't drink protein shakes...

Stopping the shakes right now wouldn't too bad as I'm slimming down before putting back muscle weight, but as soon as I'd be going back to the gym on a regular basis, I'll need them for recovery.

Then to be honest I would think it’s the high protein/low carb more so than the shakes.

Open to other people’s suggestions and ideas, but it’s definitely the first I’ve heard of this as being a side effect. Unless it’s specific to your brand / flavour.

You could try an isolate rather than the concentrates listed above. Myprotein sell a reasonably priced one. I find that taking a whey protein concentrate (i.e. ON or similar) has weird effects on me in terms of dizziness etc. so maybe the cleaner (and more expensive) isolate not having all that lactose might help?

try egg whites protein, for a few weeks

Can you give more detail. It's not farts, right? Just your natural body odour? Or is it your breath? Or what's the craic?

I don't mean to blame your girlfriend here but hear me out....

Are you sure you smell? Has anyone else said it to you? Maybe she just doesn't want you taking protein? Also the fact that you can't smell it makes it the perfect excuse for her...

    Just a theory

Both body odour and breath. I have the occasional gas, it was bad before when I took the shake right after I shook it, but now it's alright.

Will try these two (isolate whey and egg white protein).

Nobody mentioned it, but honestly I wouldn't see myself mentioning it to anybody either. Plus I see no reason for her to lie about it. Some people can't smell their own BO.

Protein eaters always smell bad. Thats why dog and cat sh1t smell worse than cow sh1t.
Tell her to get used to it!

Maybe she doesn't want you taking supplements. Take them on the sly for two weeks and tell her you are off them, see what she says.
