No Cullen or Fagan, would reckon the two Portugese lads and the four main elite women from outside Ireland won't make it either (Latvia/GB/Aus/Hun).

What chance they might start the run at around 1pm now or will they still piss about interviewing muppets like Ray Darcy for 30 mins?

he hasn't tweeted anything about being stuck? you 100% sure.

It has never started at the published time because of RTE interviewing elites and celebs, though at least this year they admit it.

Doesnt matter if he runs or not over here, never produces the goods in Ireland.

Seems to get all the good results over in the US but everytime I see him here he jsut doesnt produce it.

    Cross Country was a disaster.

Maybe now he win the bupa one :D

He wasn't far of the mark in the same race last year, in a field that included Rui Silva and Paul Tergat.

Never? Examples of all these times if you will...

28:47 for 10k in the Great Ireland Run last year, 2 seconds off the winner.... never produces the goods in Ireland my ass

Examples what about the last Cross Country race in Santry?????

What about last years run in the cross country in the Uk, and dont use he fell as an excuse he never look comfortable there in that race.

People build him up to be something special when in honest he isnt, but he might come good but I aint convince.

Irish half-marathon record in March 2009? Admittedly 60 seconds behind Sammy Kitwara and Haile Gebrselassie (I'm sure he was gutted!).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,864 ✭✭✭✭average_runner

Abnd his results for cross country 2008,2009????

I think he hasnt finished in the top 20 if i am right????
Dont get me wrong I would love to see this guy come good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭Stupid_Private

So you say he never produces in Ireland and then site examples from races outside of Ireland when I ask for examples... Can we then list all his successes from outside of Ireland then to counter?

That was a bad run but based on his build up I personally wasn't expecting anything great.

If you are referring to the Europeans that wasn't in the UK, it was in Brussels. I was at it and believe me he looked very comfortable. He could have easily got in the top 5 if he had of stayed on his feet. Having said that, the fall was his own doing IMO.

He is something special, national half marathon record, medals in NCAAs etc would agree with this. Plenty more to come from him if he can stay injury free.

I aint sure what the time is for Irish Half Marathon record and considering your mentioning him in the same sentence as the great Haile Gebrselassie, fagan's time must of been impressive and under the hour or within 30 secs of it or Haile Gebrselassie had a poorish run barely got under the hour mark!!

    Which is it???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,864 ✭✭✭✭average_runner

Of course you can write his achievements outside europe, maybe I am wrong, which would be great

They all suffered from poor weather (including Fagan).
    Sammy Kitwara - 59:57
    Haile Gebrselassie - 60:00
    Martin Fagan - 60:57 (Beating john Treacy's record of 21 years (61:00).

It was 1.00.57 but if you look at who he took that record off (World XC champion) John Treacy how can you say he is not anything special. He is one of three Irish men in the last 10 years to break 2.15 for the marathon. Interestingly he did this the year that you mentioned of the European XC which was in Brussels. Considering his training was for this in the spring and then working towards Beijing personally i feel it was s decent performance all things considered and the fact that over the last year he has been walking a fine line in terms of trying to stay healthy it is hardly a good representation to discuss performances over 2008-2009 in Europe because they have been practically non existent except for his NR

to reiterate his NR was in Europe

60:57 puts him 12th on the all time European list (11th when you put a line through drug cheat Mohammed Mourhit). Those around this time include Stefano Baldini (7 seconds quicker).

The cross country perfromances (which WERE disappointing) can be put down to the injury in Dublin but more to the fact that he is now a dedicated long distance road runner. 10k of cross country is not what he trains for and not what he should be judged on. Things like beating Luke Kibet over 10 miles on the road is what i judge him on.

Fagan has the potential to do to our half and full marathon records what Mark Carrol did over 3k and 5k. He can drag them into the very top range of European running. Injuries stopped Carroll doing it himself over the marathon and hopefully Fagan doesn't suffer the same fate.

he is a class act, by far and away our best long distance male runner. Not all class athletes can produce it on tap all the time, your attitude shows very little understanding of what happens at elite level. I have no doubt he will be devestated this weekend if he doesnt impress you.

You have zero knowledge of athletics yet cast doubts over Martin Fagan's ability and talent as an international athlete. It is easy to state these things when you hide behind a fake name. I just find it ignorant and foolish, especially coming from someone who has no idea of the dedication top level training or racing entails. I salute those who train with committment and support our elite athletes not diminish them to gain some sort of self esteem, pathetic.

Fagan has just landed and is looking forward to the race tomorrow - not sure if he'll be in 100% shape after a late arrival.

By the sounds of his journey to get home sounds like he fairly shattered already so rest will definitely be a key issue

how can an ''average runner'' say that about Fagan.
Just watch him destroy the field tommorow.
He is int he hsape of his life and will run the best way he runs tommorow,
from the front and will burn them all off.
Mark Kenneally will run a big race also and im sure this will be great for athletics.
Lets get behind ou best athletes and stop taking silly swipes at them!!!
